About the Author
Harry Georgakopoulos is a Professor of Quantitative Finance at Loyola University and Quantitative Trader at XR Trading, LLC. He has been working as a quantitative trader in Chicago, IL in the high frequency space since 2007. Prior to that, he was employed at Motorola and Andrew Corp. as an Electrical Engineer, where he designed and tested microwave transceivers for 3G mobile technologies, as well as at Milliman where he served as a Quantitative Financial Consultant. His main area of expertise is in the research and development of high-frequency, automated trading systems for futures and equities. He received his PhD in Financial Mathematics from The University of Chicago.

Good, but not Great.

As a quant I was excited to read this book based on previous reviews, and did enjoy reading it, but I want to make some statements about what I didn't like:

1. This book is very introductory. It could otherwise be considered an introduction to R. If you are comfortable with R for basic statistics and manipulating data, you likely won't learn anything new in the first half of the book. The second half of the book is where the meat lies.

2. The title falls (a little) short of expectation. I would have enjoyed more specifics in regards to quantitative trading, strategy development, algorithm design, back-testing, sensitivity analysis, etc... This includes showing more comprehensive examples and a more critical analysis of such examples. Perhaps if the author writes another book, this will be the focus. I just felt that the content wasn't thorough enough.

However, this book would be great for a student who plans on having a career in risk management or banking/trading, in a role where quantitative skills are required. For those who are already in the field, if you expect to learn beyond what you already know about R or quant trading, it may not be enough to satisfy your appetite. Keep in mind I've only elucidated my criticisms.

Too much, too little, and poorly edited.

While this book covers excellent material related to quantitative trading, it suffers from several problems.

First and foremost, it suffers from the ever increasingly common problem of poor editing. Function names are misspelled, variables names are mismatched between code and text, and figures are referenced by the wrong number. Code, tables and figures are often referred to as "below" when they aren't, and there are no numbers and multiple figures per page. Really amateur stuff.

As far as the content goes, it swings to wildly between overly simplified and ridiculously complex. For example, the introduction to statistics spends way to much time using the mean as an example, but then proceeds to a detailed yet too difficult description of bias, before abruptly pivoting to variance and variance-bias trade off in just a few lines.

The R code examples are well motivated but no one should fall for the authors pretense of this being accessible to beginners. Although well formed (if not always best written), the code is not described in sufficient detail in text.

Overall, this book could have used another round of editing and maybe 50 pages of additional material in the early chapters. Also, some of the later material should have been reworked and marketed to intermediate to advanced programmers with at least some background in quantitative finance.

editorial and program example errors hinder content

In the first 2 chapters I found a number of serious editing errors. The first program examole s don't work as printed (although an experienced R coder can spot the problems fairly easily). Overall, nice content so far. But there is no link to the example programs (you have to type them by hand) and the book assumes you already have CSV files of the data in your disk (and in the proper format, with the right features/variables, etc). Hopefully the rest of the book improves dramatically. Because I want to like this book.

The Questions after each chapter helps the reader shine light on areas in their own lives that could assist with helping one steer clear of desperation, while remaining desirous of a mate. This is a compilation of five previous books on drawing cats, dogs, wild animals, birds and horses, not a brand new book. If you don't have these previous titles you can now obtain them in one handy volume with nothing omitted. Each page (larger than UK size A4) shows you how to draw an animal or bird, starting with a rough outline and adding more in subsequent diagrams (usually six). The last two show the drawing shaded in pencil and finally with paint added for a colored study. One helpful aspect of this is that each additional drawing shows what has been added to it in a different colored pencil, although in some cases more stages would have made the book even more user-friendly. For a beginner it is not always obvious how to get from a simple line drawing to the fully shaded study next in line, but working it all out is perhaps part of the fun. Certainly this is a beautifully simple approach to drawing, where there are no captions - they frankly just aren't necessary - just steps to work through. Having tried so many times to photograph my own horse moving and failed - I really only get a good picture when she's grazing - using this book I'll hopefully be able to tailor the poses into some lovely paintings of her. And of course use the individual portraits to bring some life into other paintings. Practice ... Practice ... Practice !!

I've been a avid artist most of my Life since I could first hold a pencil. I am also an Big Animal lover so animals have always been my main subject in artwork. But I struggled with getting them in their natural form like the different poses of cats, dogs, horses, etc. This book helped tremendously in helping me get those natural poses down. It was very simple to follow and my only gripe was I wish it contained more animals than just the basic Cat, Dog, Horse, Bird, etc. But with this book alone you can explore further without it once you've mastered techniques within. Just remember Practice !

Fun for little artists

I bought this for my grandchildren (ages 9 and 12) who were visiting this summer. How wonderful to find something they liked to do that was not electronic! I am not an artist, but I think that the way this book approaches drawing - gradually expanding the detail on a few underlying shapes - actually helps kids see differently. Sophisticated art that distills reality into basic shapes may even make more sense, if they learn to draw starting with those shapes. A great rainy day book!

GREAT HELP FROM START TO FINISH

I am very pleased with the book, it does what I wanted, a step by step guide to drawing. I have been getting my grandchildren involved in Art as I have started to draw now that I have retired. I find this type of instruction teaches you to really look at the subject you are trying to draw, and you can end up with something which resembles the animal. A nice articulate book for all ages.

Have bought lots of books on bad breath and this is the only one that has helped me

About 6 months ago my girlfriend told me that I had terrible breath so I started to brush my teeth more often, use a mouthwash, floss, etc. Things did not improve and it reached a point where I was frankly quite depressed about the whole thing. I tend to avoid seeing a doctor, unless absolutely necessary, so I looked for help on the internet. I ended up buying three different ebooks. All advised me to use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and they were very poorly written. Anyway, I found that using those rinses improved my breath a little bit, although the effects would last only half an hour or so.

Then I found this book and I am really glad I bought it because the information it contains is priceless. This book is just gold, it does not compare to any other book I have read on this subject and, if all the steps are followed correctly, I think anybody with bad breath, no matter how bad, will be able to either cure it or at the very least, have it under control until they tackle all the root causes.

This is a very helpful book and it should be read by everybody, not just those suffering from chronic bad breath. I had tried so many things before that I lost sight of what I was trying to achieve. Following the steps, one by one, I learned how to find the origin of the odors, how to tackle the problem from home and where to look for more help, if needed. Like the author, I also found that several factors were playing a role; in my case, tonsil stones, unhealthy gums and allergies. So far I have used two of the recommended remedies with very good results, so I am a very satisfied reader!

Most thorough approach to a common health problem

This is a great book on how to approach and solve the problem of chronic bad breath.

I think the author's flow chart of steps to take makes sense. She addresses infections, bacterial and fungal organisms, dental problems, and digestive problems. That pretty much covers the possibilities. She includes just the right amount of photos and diagrams to be helpful. She helps you look for root causes of bad breath by giving you a list of things you can do at home but also giving you the list of things that require professional help.

I train doctors for a living and only wish I could get my doctors to be this thorough.

Wow! A wealth of information!

I bought this book for my husband. He suffers from post nasal drip and gets a little self-conscious about his breathe in social situations. Well, we have both read it and it is unbelievable how much good information is packed in the book. Bad breathe has so much more to do with just post nasal drip. We will start putting these tips and the step by step formula to work right away. I really can't believe this book is just $8. With the amount of information inside it is worth a heck of a lot more.

Carole singing - the Vaudeville way.

For a long time I could count on one hand the number of authors whose new releases I anticipated with any real excitement, but once I read Robert Jackson Bennett's award-winning debut novel Mr Shivers, I had to start counting on both. Now, after reading his third and latest novel, I'm pleased to say my excitement has not diminished, and I'm already looking ahead to his fourth. But for now, let us journey along the vaudevillian circuit with a disparate band of players collectively better known as The Troupe.

Sixteen-year-old George Carole has been the house pianist at Otterman's Vaudeville Theatre for six months, but when he hears that The Silenus Troupe is playing in a nearby town, he quickly packs his bags and heads for the train station with only one thing on his mind: finding the man he suspects of being his father, the great Heironomo Silenus. George finally tracks his father down, but discovers something far stranger than the troupe's performances. The very texture of the night is different somehow, and time and space as George knows it has been altered, meaning only one thing: The men in grey are here. Let the show begin...

Bennett wastes little time in getting the story steaming and tooting along its dusty tracks, but sacrifices nothing in the setting of the vaudevillian scene. Greasepaint will skid on your fingers as you turn the pages, and your reading lamp will illuminate a faded backdrop, before which a top-hatted and moustachioed gent will appear on stage and regale you with the splendid and exotic acts that are to come. And splendid and exotic they are too.

A Persian princess turned songstress, a puppeteer whose puppets seem to speak and move of their own accord, and a strongwoman whose feats of strength must surely be beyond her slight and fragile frame. It's refreshing to see a writer spend intellectual energy on the development of his entire cast, and not just the stars of the show, because these colourful players are not merely stage props; Bennett has a story for each and every one, and they all revolve around one man: Heironomo Silenus.

The story is as much about Silenus as it is about George, and while he steers his troupe along the vaudeville circuit and away from the men in grey, you will glimpse a magical world of fairies and living ghosts, elementals and teleporting rooms, and be left in no doubt that Silenus is other-worldly wise.

The Troupe is something of a departure from Bennett's usual laconic style, and is pacier and more energetic for it. And although there is still a good amount of darkness to fear, there's a warmth to the story that we haven't seen in his previous work. That could be down to the teenaged George, or the sense of family within the troupe, but whatever it is, it shows that expectation is a fruitless exercise where Bennett is concerned. I guess that's why I always get excited about a new Robert Jackson Bennett release, as you should too.

A little history, a little drama, a little magic

Using its Vaudeville act as cover, a troupe of mystical individuals travels the country on a supernatural mission to save the world, or- if you will- a troupe of supernatural individuals travels the country on a mystical mission to save the world. It's all kind of vague. In any event, nipping at the troupe's heels while all this is happening is a group of supernatural/mystical enemies with its own agenda, which is also kind of vague.

To be fair, the magic in the book is meant to be lyrical, mysterious, and not totally explainable in a clear narrative sense. After all, the troupe of the title is traveling around the country gathering pieces of an ancient song than can- alternately, depending on what character is explaining things- prevent pieces of the world from disappearing, bring back pieces that have already disappeared, and/or restore the balance of the universe itself. It's pretty mind bending, but, yeah, still a little vague.

Anyway, here's what works: the details about the troupe's grueling Vaudeville circuit (where an exhausting schedule doesn't prevent wonderful, strange performances); how the gifted yet misfit members of the troupe befriend each other as they daily confront their enemies and challenges, both natural and otherwise; and the many imaginative displays of magic and the supernatural- many small and whimsical, others downright epic and mind-blowing.

I did find the stakes a bit unclear, the nature of the magic often shifting and changing, and the story as a whole a little long. But I suspect others- especially those who embrace lyricism, poetry, and imagery over explanation- will be fine with most of this, and perhaps like it very much.

I will say this: this particular genre- fantasy unfolding in a real-world setting- doesn't usually grab me much, but in this case I had a pretty good time with it.

A haunting, magical novel you won't want to miss!

At 16, George Carole was raised by his grandmother, has never known his mother or father, and has been traveling with a vaudeville troupe, playing piano rather wonderfully. He has a good idea of who his father might be, and has been trying to catch up with the Silenus troupe, if only to catch a glimpse of the man that could possibly be his dad. He finally manages to catch up with them and catch a performance. He's enchanted, especially with the beautiful acrobat Colette, and fascinated with Silenus. After leaving the performance, he encounters the grey men (seriously creepy), who also seem to be after the Silenus troupe, but for much different reasons than George. It's when George attempts to warn the troupe of the grey men's presence that the real adventure, and terror, begins.

See, George has a little something special inside of him, and it's part of what makes him so valuable to Silenus and his troupe, because the troupe is much, much more than just a vaudeville act, as George will soon discover. The Troupe is, at its heart, George's coming of age story, but it's also a far-reaching magical epic. Set in a time when vaudeville and minstrel shows were popular, and horse and carriages still lingered, The Troupe is a book that you want to read without distraction, because there are quite a few big ideas in play. Don't let that scare you. The author manages to weave horror elements (wolves in human clothing and the grey men), with not so traditional fantasy elements (some rather terrifying fairies), and even southern gothic into a rich tapestry that you'll want to savor, bit by bit. There is a song that was lost when man and earth was created (The First Song), and Silenus' troupe has been gathering bits of it back together, in hopes of saving our world. Each town they stop in becomes just a little bit better when the troupe sings this haunting song. If the song is entirely forgotten, the rips that have already appeared in the fabric of our reality will get bigger, and very, very bad things will begin to come through. George has some of this song inside him, and throughout the book, it becomes clearer and clearer just how important George is to our world.

George will frustrate you, and you'll fall in love with him at the same time. He's just a kid, who sometimes fancies himself much worldlier than he really is, and is painfully naive. For someone so young to shoulder such a huge burden is enormous, and much of the book is about George learning just how to do that, as well as getting to know the father he never knew. Silenus is a force of nature and his command of his troupe and relationships with its members is also a very big part of this novel. Many elements of the Silenus troupe are strange and terrifying, such as Kingsley the puppeteer and his rather creepy, otherworldly puppets, and some are beautiful, such as the dancer Colette and even Franny, who lifts objects that no one her size should be able to lift. Silenus' silent and gentle companion Stanley (who communicates via chalkboard) is a joy, and the interplay between the troupe members is subtle, intricate, and sometimes heartbreaking, as is Silenus' rough, fierce love for his troupe. As George learns more and more about his place in this frightening new world, and also of the delicate balance that the troupe helps maintain, he also realizes what's at stake, and losing the song may mean losing everything he cherishes. The author has a gift for atmosphere, mystery, and imagery, and manages some jaw dropping twists that I didn't see coming. The Troupe was as much of an emotional journey as it was a fantasy for me, and I cherished every bit. Haunting, terrifying, and achingly beautiful, The Troupe is a book to be savored, and it will stay with you long after you've finished reading. Very highly recommended.
