About the Author
My name is Stephen McGinity and although i have written, produced and composed many songs in the past, this however is my first ever written novel. I sincerely hope that i have done it, along with its contents justice and for anyone out there who is interested in reading about my adventures across America, i hope more than anything that you will go on to find it equally humorous, touching and informative. I have recently completed writing my debut fictional book, containing a selection of hard-hitting and gritty short stories. The release date for part one of this forthcoming trilogy will be sometime in early summer. Along with this, i also have a degree in Sound Engineering and Music Production, a qualification in Forensic Linguistics which includes being only the second person in its history to receive The Jean Stone Award for Outstanding Achievement in the above field and was recently awarded the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) award for November 2011 at my very first attempt. I currently run my own small music and entertainment memorabilia business and enjoy travel, sport, music and living life.

Seeing America whilst smoking and drinking.

This Brit, who seems pleasant enough, really, really loves America. I expected a running commentary on how America stinks and was happily surprised. I got enthusiastic, through his writings, to get out and take another look at the old USA myself.
His appreciation of the sights, sounds and citizens of America was heart-warming.
Just a few negatives; his over-use of the word 'whilst', his constant 'cigarette breaks', and his bottomless capacity for bottles and glasses of wine. There were also a few bathroom scenes that I could have lived without.
Also a lot of his descriptions of sights sounded like they might have been copied right out of the brochure.
On the whole, I liked the book and as it's his first, I imagine the telling will improve with experience.

Hysterical

Think, The Rum Diaries meets On The Road and you will have some idea as to the sort of content of this book, although uniquely different in its own way. I have read both of those other books and now having read this one i have to give credit where it is due and say that i enjoyed it immensely. It is both funny and engrossing in equal measures and really kept me wanting to read another page in order to find out what Monty Python-esque situations the writer found himself to be in during his adventure across the states.
All in all, i loved it and it made me laugh a lot, even on the bus to work at 8am surrounded by strangers. This is a great debut by a clearly talented British author that, if you are like me, will give you itchy feet to get out there and travel and live life to the max!'

excellent book on exploring the US by a Brit

I myself am a Brit living in the US, and relate to a lot of the cultural differences that is described in this book. I have been asked the question that is the title of the book many times as an opening to conversations. I wonder if Americans start conversations with other Americans with the line, Excuse me, are you Arkansan? Virginian?, ...? It was funny, direct and enjoyable, and really shows how Americans enjoy interacting with visitors to their land, and breaks a lot of stereotypes than Europeans think about Americans. OK the language is strong but this adds to the realism of the author's thoughts rather than reading like a G-rated National Lampoonesque comedy. If you refuse to expose yourself to strong language, you are missing out on a lot of excellent books. The use of Whilst is not a grammatical error, as people state in other reviews. Brits use Whilst instead of While in a conversational tone, which is the tone that the author is using, and is one of those cultural differences. Read it with an open mind and you will enjoy the book.
