Great tool, unresponsive support

The good: This is a great tool for dealing with Arabic verbs, which are the backbone of any Semitic language, and especially Arabic.

The bad and the ugly: To protect themselves from piracy, the publishers of this software have required activation, and limited each activation code to two computers only. You are supposed to be able to reinstall the software on the same computer multiple times with no problem, and they do provide additional activation codes at no charge for more than two computers, but you have to rely upon them to respond to your e-mail requests for the additional codes, which based on my experience, could be a problem.

Recently I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall the operating system and all software. Now when I try to activate Verb Clinic an error message refuses to activate based on the erroneous claim that I have already activated on two other computers. OK, stuff like that happens, but I have e-mailed the software publisher four times and received exactly zero responses. I am considering telephoning them in Cairo next, and if all else fails, I will be visiting friends in Cairo in March, 2008, and will pay a personal visit to the publisher's office.

I'm writing this review with mixed feelings so please take my comments with the proverbial 'grain of salt.' On the one hand, I was impressed with the format of the software. The Verb Clinic has done an impressive job on putting together a program where the verbs are listed in a clear and precise manner. On the other hand, the first four verbs that I looked up were not to be found: like, live, love, study. This can be a little aggravating when you're using a text-book like Al-Kitab. Also (and here is the 'kicker' for me), the software can only be installed on two computers (the software is 'internet activated with a code so one cannot bypass this restriction). Now I'm really good about complying with copyright laws. If I install software on multiple computers, I make sure that the program is being 'run' on only one of them at a time. Unfortunately, between work, family, and school; I use three computers. Had I known about this restriction, I would not have purchased the software. Worse, when I go to upgrade my machines . . . what then? I'm sure it will probably be an inconvenient process (and not free)? At any rate, please take my comments for what they're worth. Cheers!

Impressive, and great self-quiz generator

I am a fan of the Vocab Clinic/Verb Clinic series, and this one did not disappoint me. There is nothing else I have found anywhere that comes close to this in thoroughness and versatility for learning ALL forms of Arabic verbs. The amount of conjugations is amazing. Look at it, print it, listen to it, record it, export it, write notes on it, autoplay it as you do soemthing else... very cool.

One of the most useful parts is the quiz generator - all kinds of settings for customizing how you want the computer to quiz you.

Also cool is that it is the first in the series to be Mac OS X compatible. I used the others on my PC, but this one on my Mac. :)

No wonder this book is "out of print"

One of the great books written about Croatian genocide against Serbs and Vatican's involment in this holocaust. Over 250 catholic priests took part and even led Croats in bruttal extermination of Serbs from Croatia. This crime is hidden and remains hidden from public eyes since Vatican was so heavily and seriously involved. Will we ever see Avro Manhatan's book "Vatican's Holocaust" available on Amazon? I doubt it.....

I liked this book because of its History and now I can understand why the Reformation took place in the early 1600's. I did not know this happened during World War II and I think it is a must read for anyone searching for the truth.

Superb overview

This book, together with Vladimir Dedijer's "The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican," forms the basis of my understanding of the Serbian genocide of 1941-1945. Edmond Paris makes a superb argument about the intimate involvement of the Catholic Church, going into all the details of how, e.g. Serbs who converted to Islam were straightaway killed, so that only conversion to Catholicism was a viable possibility. The details on Ustase-Bulgarian VMRO links and on Ustase incubation in Italy and Hungary before WWII are truly enlightening.

Interestingly, unlike many other books that focus on Jasenovac, this one gives it light and cursory treatment, which is perhaps appropriate. Its focus is on the overall genocide that took place all over Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Srem. My main gripe with the text is that it ignores the Roma almost entirely. Perhaps this is because the author had focused on the religious aspect of things, in which two ethnoreligious groups (Orthodox Christians and Jews) were subjected to genocide by the political leaderships of another two (Catholics and Muslims), but he should have addressed this third victim group, the Roma, that was killed for racial reasons.

About the Author
Mike Wilks (British, b. 1947) began his artistic career at age thirteen when he won a scholarship to art school. He ran a successful graphic design business for five years before he sold it and began writing and illustrating books in 1975. He rocketed to fame following publication of The Ultimate Alphabet in 1986; the puzzle book sold 750,000 copies worldwide. After eight illustrated books, he established himself as a novelist with The Mirrorscape Trilogy, a fantasy adventure series. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and many private collections have acquired Wilks s drawings and paintings. Wilks lives in London.

Unparalleled Detail and Whimsy!

This set of books is amazing. I love the talent of Mike Wilks. We found him through the game Scrutineyes years ago, which featured his artwork as part of an object-finding game. My only gripe is I wish the format of these books was larger so that you could enjoy the detail of the art better. The Scrutineyes panels were much larger, which was nice, especially for those with older eyes. Overall, though, I highly recommend these amazing pieces of art!

So pretty

What a beautiful book! I'm not quite sure how I found this, but I have the game Scrutineyes, which is my favorite and includes only a few of these pictures. When I saw the book, I couldn't believe there was a picture for every letter. It is also accompanied by a second book, the annotated version which lists every picture and what they are.
Beautiful artwork and hours of viewing enjoyment.

I cannot count the hours I spent pouring over the Annotated Ultimate Alphabet, starting when I was 10 and continuing through college, when my copy disappeared in a move. I'm delighted that it's finally reprinted, and I can share it again with friends and family. It is an astoundingly wonderful book.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It almost made me want to have a similar adventure as I sat and laughed at the various situations in which the author found himself. Colorful and crazy living! A perfect example of how life transforms each one of us and how our response to the challenges thrown our way can make or break us.

Laughing Outloud: From Computer Geek to Pioneer

This book is funny! The author has the ability to laugh at himself and the foibles that transformed him from a computer geek in the Silicon Valley to an ill-equipped pioneer in the mountains in far northern California. But this is no Under the Tuscan Sun-romanticized version of dropping out and living a dream. Rather, it's a humorous look at rural mountain life and a truly uncommon cast of characters who pass through the author's early pioneer experience as he and his wife shed their designer labels for 21st century coonskin caps. For all the cubicle-bound baby boomers who fantasize about dropping out, this is a raucous look at the juncture where fantasy and reality collide. When this Marin County couple buys a ramshackle country cabin surrounded by trees, wildlife and colorful neighbors, they are barely prepared for what will come next. Filled with wacky characters and their equally wacky stories, it's just downright funny. But beneath the laughs lies a story of transitions. Call it a coming-of-age story for aging baby boomers who dream of taking one last stab at living out the fantasy of getting away from it all and starting over.

A good supplement, a not so good textbook

While this book does not go into software and applications thereof, it is nonetheless an excellent introduction for a beginner. I had previously purchased (and worked through most of) The Complete Idiot's Guide to Statistics, but this book really takes more time in the hand-holding stage, simply explaining the concepts, reducing them (which could be a drawback for some people) to their basic fundamentals. So I don't see this a textbook, necessarily, but a supplement to one. The first four or five chapters to this make an excellent primer for whether statistics will be relevant to the reader, and it never really gets too aggressive in its presentation of the math beyond that. And, as has been already pointed out, there is no discussion of applied software.

I would give this three stars for its simple approach, but it is named "U Can", and it is not meant to be a stand alone source of information. I think for it purpose it does very well.

But be clear: This will not be sufficient if you are taking a statistics class, but it might help to clarify basic concepts that get rushed past with more detailed information sources. Bear in mind I am an enthusiast, I do not study math for school - so my opinion should be gauged accordingly. Even so, this is a good book to pair with a more 'conventional' textbook. Recommended in that context, or to see if you have an active enough interest in statistics to explore the subject further.

Nice coverage if it was written in the 1960s

I teach university level statistics and I find this book to be lacking because it covers no modern statistical methods and it has no coverage of analysis software. If you are taking a high school level statistics class where you are not allowed to use a computer and if your teacher is still using methods from the 1960s this is not bad at all. In general the writing and the graphics are nice and clear if you want to do things like calculate a median (or draw a box plot) by hand. Nobody in their right mind works like this any more. Perhaps worse is the fact that fundamental statistical topics are missing. Bayesian statistics, which are the backbone for a huge number of modern methods are not even mentioned in the index.

If you need something to supplement your work in high school class that stresses hand calculations consider this. If you are not stuck working like the early 1960s consider OpenIntro Statistics: Third Edition instead. It is clear and has great coverage of both SAS and R on the books website.

BRAVO FOR STATS FOR DUMMIES!!!!

PHEW! Finally something that makes Stats more fun and interesting for teens. I happened to like stats in school and was disappointed when the concept and importance wasn't discovered by my students. Stats for Dummies is done exactly as the other "Dummies" collections are. Everything is explained in full detail. You receive the simplest of instructions that are easy to understand and help grades go up instead of down. This is a must need for every student who is struggling in their Stats class.
