In the Third Edition, Richard Moore and Paul Wheeler join Tom Rossing in updating The Science of Sound to include a wide range of important technological developments in the field of acoustics. New exercises and review questions have been added to the end of each chapter to help readers study the material.

About the Author

Thomas D. Rossing completed his B.A. at Luther College in 1950, his M.S. and Ph.D. at Iowa State University in 1954. His dissertation was in the field of molecular physics. After graduating, he went into industrial research, and from there, he went to teaching. Currently, he is a professor at Northern Illinois University.

Professor Rossing has published more than 200 papers and ten books. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has held about a dozen research positions other than at his home institution—in national laboratories, in research universities, and in several other countries. The Acoustical Society of America awarded him the Silver Medal in Musical Acoustics.

Toned down math, but still pure sound

I have taught a course entitled "Acoustics for Musicians and Recording Engineers" to Engineering, Music, and Film majors using Rossing's THE SCIENCE OF SOUND. He has toned down the equations enough that the students aren't groaning, yet he's remained true to the interdisciplinary nature of acoustics as a pursuit of physics, psychology, math, and engineering. The structure of the book provides a wonderful outline for the course and it has been an invaluable resource for both me and the students who have wished to continue with their study of acoustics.

Lots of Problems

This book should have been a classic introduction to musical acoustics. Instead, it tries to hard, is convoluted, often in error, and confuses musicians.
When I taught from this book, I and the class found errors in equations, references to equations, and calculations. When undergraduates are struggling to learn, this is a very bad context.
The book is so concerned with a level of comprehensiveness, that measured clarity is left out. At the same time, for the expert, it is too little. Therefore, it appeals to neither the introductory level nor the more advanced level.
I gave up using this book.

A good elementary textbook

I have used this book as the primary textbook for an introductory course in the physics of music. It is at a somewhat higher level than some of its competitors (e.g. "The Acoustical Foundations of Music" by Backus) but still suitable for non-science majors with weak math backgrounds. It is the most thorough and informative book I have seen at this level. However, the students complained that it was somewhat dull. Also, the section on electronic reproduction of music is out of date--relatively little on CD's etc., and nothing on mp3 and related technologies. Still, I plan to use it again.

Students having a bad day would go in to the library and she ...

I worked in a High School. The School Librarian had this book. Students having a bad day would go in to the library and she would tell them to sit down, relax and then would give them this book to read. From the boy who didn't make the team, to the girl whose boyfriend broke up with her, to the student who just blew a test or had a bad day, she would make the student comfortable and have them read this book. Within a few minutes, the student sitting quietly reading this book would calm down, smile and/or laugh. So, when my Grandson fell off the swing at school and broke his elbow and arm last week, I got him this book. He is 8 and he loved it. He giggled all through it and suddenly the world wasn't such a bad place afterall :-)

Depressing story line.

My grandson found this book to be terribly depressing. He didn't like the negativity of it. I thought it would be funny and have a happy ending and my sister loved this book when we were kids so I just assumed it would be a good choice. While she found humor in it as a child, He did not think any part of it was funny!

she stops me every time we get to the line that says "I hate limas. " and reminds me that hate is ...

My niece loves this book, and we read it at least twice a weekend since I got it. However, though it's a common way for many grumpy children to express themselves, she stops me every time we get to the line that says "I hate limas." and reminds me that hate is not a nice word to say, and we shouldn't say that word when we don't like something. Just FYI, kids pay attention to wording. My niece is a bit exceptional in the vocabulary department....she's been making puns since she was about a year old....but they do pay attention, whether you know it or not.

About the Author
Roland Kidwell is an associate professor of management in the College of Business Administration at Niagara University (NY).  He has a PhD in business administration from Louisiana State University.  His research interests include withholding effort in work groups and other collectives, business ethics and human resource issues in small businesses.  His research has appeared in various academic journals including the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Small Group Research and Journal of Business Ethics.  He co-authored the text, HRM from A to Z, Critical questions asked & answered (2001: McGraw-Hill Irwin).

Christopher L. Martin is Dean of the Frost School of Business and holder of the Linco Eminent Scholars Chair of Business Administration at Centenary College of Louisiana. Prior to joining Centenary, Dr. Martin was professor and chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. His writings have addressed organizational fairness, anger and disruptive workplace behavior, technologically driven change, organizational downsizing, human resource management strategy, trust, and leadership. His research has appeared in numerous journals, including The Journal of Applied Psychology, The Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, OBHDP, and Administrative Sciences Quarterly. watching the detectives

By now it's fairly common knowledge that the side of Freud's work concerned with actual practice is, to understate the case, problematic. He is a brilliant thinker, and a beautiful writer, but his need to find the "truth" of his patients is quixotic at best. However, this very quality makes the Dora case one of the first great modern novels. What is revealed is not so much Dora's truth, as the unravelling of the position of interpretive authority - in this case, the psychoanalyst. Freud imagines himself absent from his analysis, but we see him intrude more and more into the frame as he investigates the secrets of Dora's mind. In this way, the story reads like detective fiction, making evidence less anchored in a tangible structure as it becomes more intent and focused. It's a great, juicy read. Just don't take it to seriously.

Freud was revolutionary for his time but...

Freud was definitely a revolutionary in the field of psychology during a period where water therapy and shock treatments were routinely administered and talking to patients to resolve problems was thought to be absurd. However, one cannot ignore Freud's unmistakable misogyny.

I find it disturbing that Freud's conclusion about Dora and women in general was that women like to be sexually assaulted by men. He also asserts that Dora really wanted the sexual assault and even further that she should have submitted to it.

Freud also seems to assert some kind of empiricism of his method but it is almost as though he never realizes that the entire scenario that he has "derived" are wholly constructed and based on entirely questionable interpolations.

Given the history of Dora - her father was having an affair with a Frau K, the older [than Dora] husband Herr K comes on to her and sexually assaults her on several occasions, her father becomes distant to her and uses her as a pawn in his sexual exploits with Frau K, Frau K betrays her trust, her father believes Herr K when he denies that Dora was sexually assaulted by him, her mother does not really do anything to help her, she is Jewish and living in Germany during an obviously bad period, and she was subjected to water therapy and shock therapy prior to meeting with Freud. If this was not all bad enough, she was sent to Freud by her father who also added insult to injury by telling her that she wanted to kiss him too and asserted that all of the above things were her fault.

Masterful

Whatever can be said about Freud's conclusions, his psychoanalytical method was one of the great turning points from the 19th century to the 20th. Although many of his conclusions may not be pertinent universally as he may have thought, especially the family romance--Oedipus complex, the way he tackles the neuroses of late 19th century Vienna is indeed masterful.
What matters here is the method, which has matured since the early cases in the Studies on Hysteria, which this makes a good companion for. The Dora case is unique in that Freud does not come to any sort of conclusion, the analysis is ended abruptly by the patient (or rather the patient's father). Whereas in Studies, the method is incomplete, here, the method is simply not carried to its conclusions. Both reveal much of how Freud's thought developed.
Freud says explicitly in the preface that the reader should be familiar with dream interpretation, and that he will not repeat what he had said in his Interpretation of Dreams. It should still be possible to appreciate the genius behind the work, even if some of the conclusions about the dreams may perhaps seem like jumps.

Nice, compact book on financial engineering

This book is an introduction to financial engineering from the standpoint of martingales, and assumes the reader knows only elementary calculus and probability theory. After giving a motivating example entitled "the parable of the bookmaker" the authors clarify in the introduction the difference between pricing derivatives by expected value versus using the concept of arbitrage. Vowing then never to use the strong law of large numbers to price derivatives, discrete processes are take up in the next chapter. The authors do an excellent job of discussing the binomial tree model using only elementary mathematics. Interestingly, they introduce the concept of a filtration in constructing the binomial tree model for pricing. Filtrations are usually introduced formally in other books as a measure theory concept. They then define a martingale using a filtration and a choice of measure. The use of martingales pretty much dominates the rest of the book. They emphasize that a martingale can be a martingale with respect to one measure but not to another. Continuous models are the subject of the next chapter, where the ubiquitous Brownian motion is introduced. The discussion is very lucid and easy to understand, and they explain why the conditions in the definition of Brownian motion make its use nontrivial; namely, one must pay attention to all the marginals conditioned on all the filtrations (or histories). The Ito calculus is then appropriately introduced along with stochastic differential equations. The authors do a good job of discussing the difference between stochastic calculus and Newtonian calculus. Recognizing that the Brownian motion they have defined is with respect to a given measure, they then ask the reader to consider the effect of changing the measure, thus motivating the idea of a Radon-Nikodym derivative. Their discussion is very intuitive and promotes a clear understanding rather than giving a mere formal measure-theoretic definition. Many interesting examples of changes are given. Portfolio construction and the Black-Scholes model follows. Basing their treatment of the Black-Scholes model of martingales gives an interesting and enlightening alternative to the usual ones based on partial differential equations (they do however later show how to obtain the usual equations). The next chapter discusses how to use the Black-Scholes equations to price market securities and how to assess the market price of risk. The discussion is very understandable but not enough exercises are given. Modeling interest rates is the subject of the next chapter. The mathematical treatiment is somewhat more involved than the rest of the the book. Several models of interest rate dynamics are discussed here very clearly, including the Ho/Lee, Vasicek, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross, Black-Karasinski, and Brace-Gatarek-Musiela models. A few of these models were unfamliar to me so I appreciated the author's detailed discussion. The book ends with a discussion of extensions to the Black-Scholes model. The emphasis is on multiple stock and foreign currency interest-rate models. A brief discussion of the Harrison/Pliska theorem is given with references indicated for the proof. An excellent book and recommended for beginning students or mathematicians interested in entering the field. My sole objection is the paucity of exercises in the last few chapters.

Absolutely top-notch

This is an elegant book for students of financial mathematics. You won't see the tedious Theorem/Proof format so common in other similar textbooks. But what it lacks in rigor it more than makes up for in other more important areas: superb writing, clear explanations and brilliant insight into the most popular valuation models. For instance, the concise but very clear derivation of the Black-Scholes formula should impress anyone who has studied the PDE-based derivation covered by Hull and others.
There is little discussion of empirical issues. This, in my opinion, was a wise choice by the authors. Any such discussion would severely dilute the strength of the book -- namely, the fundamentals of stochastic calculus applied to arbitrage pricing. For those interested in empirical features of the markets, I'd suggest "Econometrics of Financial Markets" (Andy Lo, et al).
I find it ironic that the punchline for the whole book -- a chapter on exotic option valuation where probabilistic techniques such as the reflection principle naturally come into play -- did not make it to production. But this excellent chapter is available on the errata Web page under [...]
This book is a great place to begin study for quantitative MBA students or math students with an interest in option valuation. Supplement this book with Oksendal or Karatzas / Shreve, perhaps, for more in-depth material on stochastic calculus.

A Necessary Book for (aspiring) Financial Engineers

Baxter/Rennie deserves its reputation as the best introductory book to modern financial engineering because of its terse, elegant description of the martingale approach to asset pricing. The basic machinery of financial engineering comes from fields in applied analysis such as stochastic calculus and martingale theory, whose presentation is often weighed down with overbearing technical considerations. While necessary from a mathematician's perspective (and often relevant even in many real-world cases), a reader with mathematical maturity but without formal training in measure theory or probability can nonetheless appreciate and understand the basic tools used over and over again in Black-Scholes, and more generally, in martingale methods for pricing.

The quantitative analyst often needs to thorougly understand both the theory and the techical aspects of implementation of these models, and often studies these subjects in graduate programs. Many participants in quantitative fields such as fixed income and derivative trading/pricing often want an intuitive notion of what these "quants" are doing. Baxter/Rennie serves as a good book that is far more advanced than the excellent book by Hull; the latter is a wonderful introduction to quantitative fields, but Baxter/Rennie is the first book that truly introduces the math in a unified presentation that encompasses the three most important tools of mathematical finance (assuming, of course, the Ito-Doeblin calculus driven by Brownian motion); the Cameron-Martin-Girsanov (CMG) Theorem that permits changes of measure, the Feynman-Kac formula and the Martingale Representation Theorem.

Like most books on the subject, Baxter/Rennie attempts (but actually succeeds unlike many competing texts) to give a relatively harmless, intuitive introduction to the Ito-Doeblin calculus and martingales; the two are linked through the martingale properties of Brownian motion, which later permits martingale pricing under a risk-neutral measure.

Chapter 3, the core of the book, introudces Black-Scholes-Merton theory as a simple, special case of martingale pricing. For those who are sick of reading PDE proofs of the Black-Scholes formula that are technically correct but don't actually teach anything about finance, this chapter is for you.

Chapter 5, which introduces the market models of modern fixed income pricing, provides a presentation different from most other books by introducing the general methods (Heath-Jarrow-Morton, or HJM) models first, and giving the short-rate models as a special case of the HJM model. While this is chronologically out-of-order and arguably gives the "harder" case first, it is consistent with the no-arbitrage (or martingale) approach to asset pricing and emphasizes the approach that now dominates the feld.

The final chapter provides an extension of the models in the previous chapter, i.e. by generalizing to the multidimensional cases, etc. These are intuitively similar (although technically more complex) to the cases presented in the earlier chapters, and in keeping with the simple, elegant presentation of the book, are treated appropriately as relatively basic extensions.

Baxter/Rennie emphasizes the models, not the pricing of individual securities; the elegance and economic meaning are stressed at the expense of practical considerations in many cases. For this reason, the book would be a good text for a motivated undergradate studying math/"hard" sciences or an MBA student, quantitative traders or other practitioners responsible for using, but not building models.

For those learning quantitative analysis more seriously, this book would be a good complement to Shreve's Stochastic Calculus in Finance Vol II (not to be confused with the MUCH more technical monograph by the same author). The latter covers many more mathematical topics and their applications in pricing actual instruments, and has an exhaustive list of excellent problems; nonetheless, the book is meant for a full-year sequence in mathematical finance at the Masters' level and by the very nature of being so complete it lacks the elegance of Baxter/Rennie.

My recommendation for those learning mathematical finance is to buy both Baxter/Rennie and Shreve Vol. II. Work through the problems in the latter text and you'll know a little bit of everything from stochastic volatility to jump proceses. Review the former before and interview and you'll be able to quickly answer basic questions in simple English (or whatever language you speak other than math). While it doesn't have many good problems (and they are relatively basic compared to Shreve, for example), that's not the point of the book - it's meant to develop intuition, not technical skill or theoretical abstraction. Buy both - if you're entering this field or are already studying/working in it, you can afford both of them.

About the Author
In 1976 Kevin Zraly was hired as the cellar master to the newly opened Windows on the World restaurant at One World Trade Center; that is where he opened his Windows on the World Wine School and where it remained until September 11, 2001. It is now located at the JW Marriott Essex House on Central Park South, and, to date, has more than 20,000 graduates. Kevin Zraly's Windows on the World Complete Wine Course was first published in 1985 and has since sold more than three million copies. He also created the Sherry-Lehmann/Kevin Zraly wine club and master classes. His honors include Lifetime Achievement Awards from the James Beard Foundation and European Wine Council, the James Beard Award for the Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year, and the Food and Beverage Association's Man of the Year Award. He is on the board of trustees at the Culinary Institute of America and has been featured in the New York Times, People magazine, the Wall Street Journal, GQ, and USA Today. He lives in New Paltz, NY.

Enjoying the book so far, but none of the video codes work

Still reading the book but one thing I am finding VERY frustrating is none of the QR codes (or the Bitly addresses below them) are functional. They all go to error pages. I'm hoping the publisher sees this review and gets them fixed so readers can watch the videos. I will check them again and update my review when I'm done reading the book.

I just completed my L1 Sommelier certification and this book is really helpful at laying down the basics for anyone who wants to learn more about wine. I love Kevin's story (see Chapter 1) and the margins are packed with great facts, its simply brimming with information but doesn't feel overbearing at any point. I will need more in-depth books to get to the next level but, this is an excellent starting point to lay a broad foundation of knowledge before diving into very specialized topics. I have plotted out a series of personal tastings over the next 8 weeks using Kevin's book as a framework. Very helpful, indeed!

I am a server in a fine dining restaurant, and have been studying this book to gain extra wine knowledge. Zraly not only simplifies the extensive information there is on varietals, but gives fun facts as well. For any waiter wanting to expand or start their current wine education, this book is a must.
