A must for your doll crafting library.

This book is fantastic! I highly recommend it for the nuts and bolts of making doll shoes. Tarja has excellent writing skills. When I read and look at the photos, even more ideas come to mind because she explains the why and how so well. This is a coveted book I will keep in my reference library for lots of instruction and inspiration. I have been making my own doll shoes over the years and have learned how to make them because of Tarja's tutorials on Flickr and her blog. I have learned how to make high heel shoes for my Sybarite dolls. It is so satisfying, not easy, but loads of fun to do! I am using the book currently to refresh my memory of the how tos and to try new techniques that I was afraid to try before. There are simple to advanced techniques in this book so I can keep referring back to move into more complicated shoe making.

good for beginners and anyone interested in making doll shoes

It is really hard to find books on how to make doll shoes. especially if you want to make fashion doll shoes not baby doll shoes. this one is great and you will find every kind of doll represented from flat baby doll to high heeled sybarite.

While the book shoes a variety of ways shoes can be made and the details are very very good I would have loved to see a few step by step projects or maybe links to videos.

I think there is plenty to work with here. but I would feel more competent with a lesson in say how to make a pair of leather shoes with a stiletto heel. lol.

But seriously, I haven't found anything else out there that gives advice and shows pics in addition to explaining tons of things like this book does.

This is the best introductory book to microelectronics. It's a great book for Electrical/Computer engineering undergraduates. The explanation, examples, tables, figures makes it fun and simple to learn microelectronics. Believe it or not, learning microelectronics can be fun if you use this book.

Celebrating unknowingness

This is about religious doubt. I very much enjoyed the series when it was first broadcast last year on BBC Radio 4. Reading the transcript has allowed me to stop and think, and above all to revel in the state of unknowingness. Gods seem to have been dying almost as soon as they emerged from the twilight of humanity's consciousness; yet their creation was a pivotal event in recognising the Other (as Feuerbach cogently argued). Perhaps an honest doubt is that indispensable Other of faith? As Richard Holloway says: "doubt is coactive with faith - they are two sides of the same coin".

In the hands of great poets and writers (e.g. Tennyson, Keats, Dostoyevsky), thinkers (Voltaire, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein) and scientists (Copernicus, Newton, Darwin), doubt is elevated to the summit of human thought. Tennyson's wonderful poem In Memoriam was an inspiration for the series' title:

"There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds."

It is doubt - not certainty - that has made humanity what it is. Certainty has had a paralysing effect not just on religion but also on science, and 'the golden calves' of science (with an air of awe-inspiring 'evidence') can be ever so alluring. Those who challenge any entrenched paradigm are in for a lot of flak: burning at stake, derision, ostracism. Yet, paradoxically, it's the doubters and the challengers that keep human thought alive!

Richard Holloway and his collaborators impress me greatly not only with their humility towards the mystery of existence but also with their sincere respect towards a reader/listener. They communicate thoughts in a clear yet poetic language, without a shade of patronising or hubris. In their hands, doubt is not only honest, it is also superbly modest.

A sustained ideological campaign vilifying Muslims has been underway since the rise of globalization. Edward Said has shown us that "othering" the "Orient" was essential to colonialism. While this is a seminal notion, a broader overview demonstrates how the "othering" of the Arab East has undergone many stages since the Crusades and how these shifts reflect the changing position of the West. Using examples from Dante to warrior-diplomat Ibn Munqidh's memoirs of the Crusades, we will demonstrate that the relationship between the East and the West in pre-modern times was a relationship between rivals. In contrast to the modern era, each side certainly believed themselves to be the morally and religiously superior without essentially dehumanizing the other. On the other hand, the way the West stereotyped Muslims during the colonial period and Cold War differs in ideological intent and consequences from the vilifying of Muslims since Desert Storm and the rise of a unipolar world. This campaign is not a political "conspiracy" launched by some secret cabal that has taken over the White House. Rather, the campaign is "ideological," emanating from various, even competing, political and cultural strata within American and European society. These competing strata are bound by an ideological position that configures Muslims -- in the Middle East and as immigrants in Europe-- as an obstacle to globalized "humanism," "civilization," "modernity" and liberalism. In this respect, the campaign is less a campaign against Islam the religion than it is against Muslims, those living in a region of critical economic and political interest to the US Empire.
