Jimmy White: Second Wind, by Jimmy White

ARGUABLY NO sports star has ever captured the nation's hearts like Jimmy White. In an era where sportsmen have gained a reputation for their blandness, White has consistently been a brilliant one-off. Regarded as one of the most naturally gifted snooker players of all time, White has enthralled the public with his antics on and off the table over three decades. Famously, he has been a runner-up in the World Championships on a record six occasions and he has taken his hugely loyal fans through a rollercoaster of emotions, particularly in the 1990s when he lost five consecutive finals. However, that run did nothing to quell the public's fascination with a sportsmen who has never forgotten his roots. Jimmy's life has been filled with challenges, all of which he discusses, from fighting testicular cancer to changing his name to 'Jimmy Brown' for a publicity stunt in 2005. With a searing honesty, White outlines everything from his early life, his monumental natural talent and what it feels like to have got so close to sporting immortality - yet just missed out. White's no-hold barred account of a life lived in the fast lane also makes for intriguing reading. The girls, the drugs, the booze and the rock n' roll lifestyle; Jimmy pulls no punches when discussing his tearaway behaviour - his massive love and enthusiasm for life itself, his family and the sport he adores more than any other. With a best friend in Ronnie Wood - the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, White has been at the best parties, the best gigs and lived the dream for 30 years. In a darker way, find out his honest opinions on match-fixing, drugs in sport and the friends and foes he made on the gruelling snooker circuit. Filled with anecdotes and tales galore - as well as lifting the lid on snooker's chronic problems - Jimmy's story is a thrilling and fascinating insight into a phenomenal character - on and off the snooker table.

poor
By Arran Dowling Hussey
A double of his first book 16 years ago save for admitting his coke habit. Little new or of interest for those who followed his career. Was it written only for the money ?

This is a poor version of an otherwise interesting life story
By AJA Bram Janse
This is a poor version of an otherwise interesting life story.
I reviewed Behind The White Ball - his first attempt at the autobiography and it was MILES superior to this one. First off the most interesting stories in here where already in the other book and what's new here is he's lost his way in terms of staying true to himself in his writing. It's funny in parts, and it's interesting in others but overall he should have called it a day with the first one. This one reads like he wrote it for some self serving reason - which is NOT Jimmy's usual MO at all - maybe to convince someone he's not going to do coke anymore, or just to make some amends. But you do that privately and this is just a nothing of an attempt to tell a story. I am really sorry to say it because I love Jimmy. But don't read this - get the first one. It's classier and it's all him. I think he got forced to write this and it's brutal. Trying to convince others of something in a public forum is a zero sum game. And it also reads like many many reasons (or if you're mean about it "excuses") for not winning the World Championships. All of which he pretty much blames on the cocaine. Comon Jimmy - you did all that and never took it serious enough because you were AFRAID - if you gave it everything you had. Locked yourself up and practiced and did what you should do, what if it wasn't enough to get by Davis or Hendry? THAT
is the reason - yea, you did the coke, you did the drink, you did the late nights - but you're not saying WHY and trust me, it's NOT because you just like it. That's it SOME of the time but the times it was really hurting you THAT IS NOT the reason. You need not have feared it, you would have won. But not 10 times. But you get to say that now because you didn't even win one because of the cocaine. That's part of it no doubt, but that's not all of it. Not even close. Ask yourself the deeper questions or don't soil an otherwise great autobiography - the first one - with this. It's not good, it reads self serving and without perspective. And one last thing, it is NOT a cautionary tale against drugs. Just because you say so it won't help anyone. Not with what you said, you didn't take it NEAR far enough to have that affect. EXACTLY HOW did it almost cost you your life? It's a shallow book - and I love Jimmy but I write this so I hope people DON'T read it. I think that will keep him more as everyone's favorite. Any when did you start thinking its a good idea to talk about what other people did? You used to mind your own business - but now??? For shame Jimmy. For shame. Don't read it - Jimmy comes down a notch or two if you read it.

I actually got a hangover just reading this book !!
By John Kean
When the Daily Mail first began promoting this book last year it was all about the drug addiction which initially put me off. However, having later picked up a hard copy in a bookstore and reading the introduction it was clear that instead of glamorising drugs the book was centered more on warning others about the long slide downwards and the damaging effects they have on a person's achievements and abilities.

This book is really about Jimmy and snooker and is especially good at recreating the golden days of the 80s and 90s when snooker seemed to rule the world enjoying hundreds of hours of covereage on mainstream television. Jimmy tells dozens of stories about that era and the many individuals involved in it that help fill in the gaps and answer many questions such as what were Alex Higgins and Steve Davis really like? We get to learn exactly how he felt after each and every one of those lost World Championship finals where, 'Even grown men around me were crying'.

Most stars who have experienced three decades at the top of their sport generally retire, write a book and go into coaching. Jimmy has provided us with a very good and honest insight into his sport and his life from around 1980 up until 2014. The big difference between him and other sporting legends is that he's STILL here competing and as ever gunning for that elusive world crown at the Crucible in Sheffield. He seems to have a new 'cleaner' life now and while being older than most other professionals the hunger is still there along with 30 years experience of competing on the world stage.

If you got excited when Andy Murray won Wimbledon then I could imagine a Sheffield audience roaring until their ears bleed if Jimmy were ever to win his title. There are certainly many new high-calibre snooker players around but unlike in tennis no matter what your world ranking is or how many other tournaments you've won it's very hard to win a match when you're sitting down. When White is in form and at the table then that's where you'll be.

So come on Jimmy, please put us out of our misery and win that bloody title!
