About the Author
John Bicheno is the Director of the MSc program in Lean Operations at the Lean Enterprise Research Centre (LERC) of the Cardiff Business School, Wales. At the time of writing, this is the only Masters program in the world devoted to Lean, and is taught on-site at factory locations.
John has graduate degrees in Engineering, Systems and Management, and is CFPIM certified by APICS. Following 10 years in operations management and engineering, he started his Lean journey while at the University of the Witwatersrand in the early 1980’s, and continues to learn. He has been a mentor, trainer and consultant to scores of companies, and is on the board of AME UK.

Good reference, somehow biased in favor of Lean

There is an existing approach to combine strengths of TOC, Lean and 6sigma. This approach is usually tagged as TLS (T for TOC, L for Lean, S for 6Sigma). In this book author tried to bring evertything into lean and called it as "New Lean". I found it strange since it is still the same old friend whatever you call it..
There is a great collection of techniques related to core principles throughout the book. Anyone trying to improve his business could benefit from this book. It helps you to diagnose your business and guides you to improve it. Then you have the chance to search more on selected required techniques which is a major shortcut .
As the name implies author has a bias favoring lean but anyway there are several notes on drawbacks of lean also.
This is a reference book, not a "how to" book. You need to search more according to your needs.

A Good Reference

The Lean Toolkit is a concise reference of lean tools and techniques. Every tool is presented with a brief summary and some suggestions for how to apply it.
Overall, I thought it was a valuable reference. It introduced me to several new tools and reinforced many of the tools that were already familiar.
In terms of criticism, this probably isn't a book that you would sit down and read cover to cover. I browsed the topics, and I will return to it periodically as a reference.
I liked it, and I would recommend it for lean students and practitioners.

A brief description of every Lean Manufacturing tool in one place!

A clear explanation of each of the tools that may be encountered while implementing Lean. It is best used as a reference book.
As an example, The New Lean Toolbox briefly describes six different types of Kanban, plus the related Ford System,CONWIP and POLCA in six concise pages. It mentions two more types. Rules of Kanban and calculating the number of Kanban cards is included, including calculations for special circumstances.
I make sure all my clients' Lean Leaders have a copy, so we can be clear in our discussions of Lean tools being implemented.
