About the Author
Fr. Dumitru Staniloae (1903-93) is widely considered as one of the greatest Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century. He was Professor of Dogmatics at the Theological Institute in Bucharest, Romania, from 1947 to 1973. In 1990 he was made a Member of the Romanian Academy.

Part Three of a Masterpiece

I have enjoyed every single book so far in this 6 volume, translated version of Fr. Staniloae's remarkable "Orthodox Dogmatic Theology." Every page is a veritable treasure trove of insight and a delight to read. Even in translation, Fr. Staniloae's prose is beautiful and engaging. In fact, Fr. Staniloae's joy whilst writing this work is so evident in his style that one can almost "see" him smiling as he wrote - and such infectious joy readily engages the reader.

In this volume, as the introduction notes, Fr. Staniloae goes into some much "heavier" material - far more "difficult" than the previous two volumes. However, with careful reading, the work yields such beautiful truths as to make the "work" very much worth the effort.

Generally speaking, I would not recommend any of Fr. Staniloae's works to a non-Orthodox reader. Too much of what he discusses, both here and elsewhere, in my opinion, requires a fundamental understanding of what Met. Hierotheos called the "mind of the Orthodox Church." Given that Orthodoxy never underwent the scholastic transformation that the Western (non-Patristic) churches underwent, this means that it is nearly impossible to simply read a book, or even a series of books, and "get it." There are no "charts" with "boxes" that can encompass the teachings of the Church simply because it is too hard to reduce teachings in such a manner when it comes to Orthodoxy. (This does not mean Orthodoxy is "complex," but, simply put, that the Western (non-Patristic) traditions, be they Latin from Rome or Protestant, that form the basis of so much Western (non-Patristic) understanding of Christianity, or knowledge, in general, are so alien to the older Orthodox Holy Tradition that it can very much *seem* complex).

However, for the Orthodox who wish to, so to speak, take their "learned faith" (to borrow another phrase from Met. Hierotheos) to "the next level," I can think of no better modern writer than Fr. Staniloae. To me, he is the closest modern writer to St. Maximos the Confessor in so ably and beautifully bringing together so much of the Faith that *can* be written down. Another advantage he has over nearly all other modern writers is that he, as noted in the introduction to the first volume, brings together Fathers, and Truth found in even non-Orthodox writers, from East and West - taking leave of the sad habit of many writers, especially within the Russian tradition, to cite/reference only Fathers/writers of their own "jurisdiction."

Overall, an amazing and wondrous work very much worth the time and effort to take in! Highly, highly recommended.

The Art of Blending

This is a beautiful book, but so disappointing. Nowhere was it indicated that the recipes require the purchase of pre-blended spices purchased from the author's store, La Boite a Epice. I was looking to learning how to blend my own spices--I recently received the new Cuisinart spice mill as a gift. It should be noted on Amazon.com that the recipes are of no use without the author's blends.

This book is called Art of Blending yet nowhere in the book is there anything about blending spices, recipes for spice mixes, or even suggestions how one might mix spices. Instead it seems like a book to sell spices from the authors store. If for some reason you cant get your hands on the spices then you dont even have a sense of what a good substitute would be... In short, it is a completely useless sales tool for the author to sell rather expensive spice mixes. disappointing.

The art of pretension

Lior Lev Sercarz is an artisan blender of spices, and really has some lovely mixes, at least by the sound of things. I wouldn't know, he doesn't actually share any recipes for his spice blends within "The Art of Blending."

The book is based entirely on spice blends that you can only get at very select market locations, and each blend runs at about 12-15 dollars a pop. While I'm sure Mr. Sercarz uses some spices that aren't readily available at places like Penzey's, or specialty spice shops, such as smoked cinnamon, many of his blends call for readily available ingredients like lavender, lemon peel, cumin, etc.

This book is sort of like buying some assemble-your-self furniture, taking it home, opening up, and finding out that you need to buy special tools from the manufacturer, and that every hole/screw requires a different tool. There is absolutely no reason for Lior not to include his blends, beyond narcissism and greed.

As a note, the photography is pretty lovely and it is amazing that they came up with new and impressive ways to shoot the different spice blends and their components. It is worth fingering through for that, but I would consider getting this book as a gift a passive aggressive statement.

A Guide Book for Meaningful Living

People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered. Love them anyway. From the book (the first paradoxical commandment).

Sometimes it seems like there is just so much wrong in the world that nothing we can do will make a difference. In Kent M. Keith's book "Do It Anyway" he shows us that one small person can make a difference; one small person can be the change through living the paradoxical commandments.

Mr. Keith wrote the paradoxical commandments back in the 1960's while attending college. Over the years they gained world-wide popularity; they have circulated over the internet, and you've probably been the receiver of them many times.

"Give the world your best and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world your best anyway." From the book (the tenth paradoxical commandment).

This is a sweet little book, and can easily be read in a day or two. I really enjoyed Mr. Keith's writing style, which was very inspirational. The book is also filled with touching personal stories and questions that help the reader to think about how living the paradoxical commandments can bring more meaning and happiness into their lives and the world around them.

Sometimes we forget to give our best. It happens to all of us. But when we get to the point where we are taking the easy way out rather than doing what's right, we are off our path, and most likely just getting by rather than living a life filled with meaning. By following the paradoxical commandments, we gain a sense of personal self-worth, and find our lives filled with meaning and happiness.

This book is excellemt. It motivated me to "Do it anyway" I read it within a week and really enjoyed it. This is the 2nd book that I have read by Keith and I plan on reading more.

Nothing in life is free

The plan did work for me, but be prepared to have to work at following the eating rules. It is definitely not as easy as they make it sound. The bottom line is that I don’t think I have a digestive disorder now and it was plain that did before. Be sure you are ready to change a few things about the way you eat. The price was definitely a bargain.

Not worth the $50.

Informative but vague. More recipes than information. A little weak on substance. Most information can be found through the internet. It was nice to have the information packaged in one source but again more recipes than substance. The recipes take up over have the book. Could of had a website siting the recipes rather than taking up all those pages. Ultimately small on information and big on recipes you may never cook. And for $50 and would rather research myself. Also didn't like the references to his own products.

Deborah Layton was, by her own account, a typical rebellious youth, with nothing in her dossier to indicate that she would eventually find herself in Jim Jones's People's Temple in Guyana, looking for a way out of the green hell that had become the People's Temple Agricultural Project. She barely escaped in June 1978. Within months, more than 900 people drank Jones's cyanide punch and committed "revolutionary suicide" in the face of mounting stateside pressure on the cult, some of it prompted by Layton's own testimonials upon her safe return home. Her brother, Larry, also survived, and as one of the few left alive in Guyana became a scapegoat for Jones's crimes; he is now serving a life sentence in federal prison.

There is a simple naiveté at the root of Seductive Poison. Layton's own youthful innocence, foremost, but also the desire to trust another person, the need for belonging and meaning, which led so many perfectly normal Americans to place their faith in a suicidal madman. Far from confirming the simplistically monstrous Jones of the public imagination, Layton paints the man as a dark, twisted shaman, by turns soothing, then suddenly malevolent and petty, with a hugely sadistic streak that belied his perfectly coifed hair, expensive suits, and impressive political connections. The scenes in which she describes her escape and flight to safety are wrenching, her last-minute conversation with Jones and his seductive appeal for her to return home to Jonestown are chilling, and her fear and indecision are still palpable on the printed page. For Layton to recount tales this personal and horrifying must have been tremendously difficult. Published on the 20th anniversary of the suicide-murder of more than 900 followers of Reverend Jim Jones in the Guyanese jungle, Layton's book is the first by a former high-level member of the People's Temple. A troubled teen from an affluent family in Berkeley, Calif., Layton and her mother were introduced to Jones by her brother, Larry. For seven years, she was Jones's close confidante in California, and in 1977, she left with her mother for the "Promised Land" of Jonestown. In the months that followed, she became aware of trouble in "Paradise," realizing she had arrived in a work camp patrolled by armed guards and ruled by a deceitful "Father" (Jones), who practiced manipulative mind-control tactics, dictated grueling physical labor, staged suicide drills and devised bizarre punishments such as wrapping a boa constrictor around the neck of a "sinner" or hanging children upside-down in a well. By May 1978, Layton had engineered a complex escape plan and returned to the U.S. Concerned for her mother, brother and friends still in Jonestown, she went to both the press and the State Department to warn of a possible mass suicide-murder but found few who believed her. Her fears were, of course, founded and not only did her mother die of cancer in Jonestown shortly before the mass suicide, but Larry was convicted for the conspiracy to kill Congressman Leo Ryan and is still in prison. Layton's lengthy account provides valuable insights into the inner workings of cults, and the details of her escape in the closing chapters generate strong suspense, hinting at film possibilities. In 1978, following orders from their leader, over 900 followers of the Rev. Jim Jones committed suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. They were convinced that their Guyanese enclave, the "People's Temple," was about to be invaded. The public was shocked, unable to understand how this horrible event could have occurred. Layton, one of the tragedy's few survivors, was a high-level member of the People's Temple. Her mother, a Holocaust survivor, and her brother Larry were close confidants of Jim Jones, having joined his group in the early 1970s. Jones led his disciples to Guyana from California to develop a Socialist paradise. But Jones's paranoia soon turned Jonestown into a community of terror and repression. Recognizing the danger, Layton managed to escape and alert the U.S. authorities, whose investigation led to the ultimate tragedy. Vividly written and powerfully told, this book shows convincingly how a group of people, seduced by promises of an "Eden" on earth, will blindly follow a charismatic leader. EYE OPENING ABOUT RELIGIOUS CULTS

Deborah Layton was very corageous and thorough in writing this very interesting book about the Jonestown mass suicide. She was only a young woman when she first got in touch with Jim Jones's temple and got involved deeply with it.

The book is written in a way that the reader can follow each step of a member joining the cult, so we can track every single decision made and question it. It is interesting to note, following her narrative, that there seemed to be no highly unreasonable decisions, just a sequence of commitments that drove the temple members deeper and deeper into the psychological orbit of the reverend. From San Francisco to international banking transactions to hide Jim's money, to obsessively worrying about an imminent governemtn attack, the reader follows people who would otherwise be reasonable and kind doing outrageously aggressive and violent actions, even including physical torture.

There is also, unexpectedly, a high suspense section in the end, when Deborah escapes the compound in Guyana to try to come back to the US. Though I suppose she is a first time writer, she was quite capable of transmitting the gut wrenching circumstances of her escape.

This is an eye opening book, one that you will find yourself thinking about for at least a couple of months after reading it.

Okay history of Jones/Jonestown

Layton was a Peoples Temple member, leaving months before the massacre. The book is not well written or edited so it's not that easy to read in parts, but it's probably one of the basic books on Jonestown/Peoples Temple...just know that Layton wrote it to explain her role in the Peoples Temple cult and criminality so it's got her slant on it in explaining her motivations and allegations against people who are now dead.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The Author's first hand experience made for a believable story and it was easy to go through the anguish and suffering with her. Oh that we could all learn some of the hazards of extremism from this book.
