the butler did it

Tall 24yo butler heroine is leading her enigmatic businessman employer Hero to believe that the blonde woman in slinky lingerie he slept with the night before was 1 of his estate's ghosts. She is embarrassed that she doesn't remember anything that happened while she slept b/c of being drunk & feels relieved that Hero doesn't recognize her the next day dressed in her usual prim butler uniform & tightly-swept hairstyle. He soon finds out what she's been hiding when he sees her on a date with her hair down & dressed sexily. How far will Hero pursue her & how much will she resist their mutual & strong attraction to each other?

This Napier book was a bit of a fun read. Hero & heroine played a hide & seek game re: the mysterious blonde woman's identity & after he finds out it was really her. It gave their romance some adventure & suspense & put some steam in their sexual chemistry. There were some socioeconomic & personal differences b/w Hero & heroine that put a block in their romance. Overall a light & good romance.

Benedict Savage is a successful architect, going on 34 when that vague sense of dissatisfaction that has been plaguing him for quite sometime makes him seek refuge in Whitefield House, a property that he had inherited from an uncle who had left it to him, a property that had come along with his deceased uncle’s female butler Vanessa Flynn.

Finding a mystery woman in Benedict’s bed is what kick-starts the story, a woman who disappears by the next morning leaving Benedict flummoxed by the whole thing until he discovers who it is that had been gracing his bed that night. Thus follows a series of twists and turns, a lot of advancing on Benedict’s part and retreating on Vanessa’s part which culminates of course in a happily ever after.

Susan Napier has some very good Harlequin romances out there, in fact she is one of those Harlequin authors who is on my auto-buy list. The aspects that worked for me includes the hero; his intensity is hard not to take notice of. Then there is the novelty of a heroine who is taller than the hero in the story; as most romance readers know, that is something that rarely happens in a romance.

The sexual tension though was a vital presence in the story, I got a bit tired of the continuous back and forth drama that was happening and in the end skim read through chunks of the story later on. Recommended for die-hard fans of Harlequin romances.

I enjoyed this story very much. I really liked how vocal the H was as he told the h what he was thinking and was intending to do - very HOT! Another aspect I liked was how the h was taller than the H. I'm a tall woman and when I wear heels I tower over my husband and we both love it. The difference in height is liberating and allows a stronger ability to tap into my own female aggressiveness. I really liked hoe the verbal rhetoric between the H and h illustrated this aspect. Very nice story!!!

In the early '70s Tiptree (the pseudonym of clinical psychologist Alice B. Sheldon), made a big splash in SF with a series of powerful, convoluted and misanthropic stories. The three recent tales included in this small, illustrated collection, however, show a certain mellowing. They are touristy romantic fantasies, all set in a Mayan region of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Quintana Roo. The heavy psychological freight that weighed down the earlier work remains, but the Mayans have been tritely cast in place of Tiptree's inscrutable aliens. In fact, her self-proclaimed "Mayaphilia" turns the Indians into one-dimensional objects of uncritical worship. Finally, these ghosts, gods incarnate and oceanic apparitions are pallid inventions with less impact than the unpleasant drawings that accompany them here.

A Magical Region's Magic

Alice Sheldon and her husband Huntington vacationed for years on the (then nearly roadless) east coast of the Yucatan peninsula, long before such resorts as Cozumel, Cancun and Mujeres appeared, and virtually destroyed the region, ecologically and in almost every other way. So the local color that is the main point of the three short stories contained in this slim volume is absolutely authentic. For purposes of the tales, Sheldon assumes her "Tiptree" persona, an elderly male vacationing alone in the same beach cabin Sheldon and her husband shared in the real world.

In each story, a classic "unreliable narrator" gives Tiptree an account of an amazing experience with supernatural or science-fictional overtones. In the first story, a hippy encounters a person... or thing... washed up on shore, that is mysteriously and fatally attractive. In the second story, a Mayan youth starts out on water skies and yet apparently winds up in the ancient Maya city of Tuluum at its height a thousand years ago. In the third story a scuba diver discovers that the polluted and dying sea may be trying to fight back in a very direct yet deceptive way against its greatest enemy, man.

Each story spends most of its verbiage in an expert evocation of the time and place... a place almost as exotic as an alien planet. These stories are quite different from the usual output of Tiptree or her other persona Raccoona Sheldon, but were written at the height of her powers. Each is a near-perfect example of the wonders an expert author can wring out of the short-story format.

The illustrations by Glennray Tutor may be an acquired taste that I didn't manage to acquire during the reading of the book; they are perhaps best left undescribed here.

Three great stories by Tiptree aka Alice Sheldon. Interesting for SF fans and SCUBA divers. Mysterious stories from Cozumel and the Costa Maya from the days before the cruise ships. With these three and The Women Men Don't See, you have a pretty good vision of how she saw and experienced the region.

magical

This is one of the most striking books I have read in the last year. It contains three short stories, all set in the Yucatan with the same main character. All three deal with ambiguous, mysterious, and "magical" events that were told to the main character. The stories are told in a way that leaves you wondering if the events they tell of happened or if they came from the fevered minds and imaginations of the tellers. I read a lot and buy very few books, but this is a book that I will keep and lend to anyone who will accept it. The closest genre I can think of to Tales of the Quintana Roo is "urban fantasy", it has the same "maybe it could happen" feeling to it, but the setting, the Yucatan Peninsula, is much more romantic and evocative than the settings of the urban fanatasies I've read.

In 1940, a young Harvard-educated American named Varian Fry, inexperienced and not at all certain that he possessed any courage, went on a secret mission to Marseille. There, with only three thousand dollars and a list of names, he was to help those who had fled Nazi Germany and were now trapped in southern France.

The list he took with him had been prepared by, among others, the Museum of Modern Art and Eleanor Roosevelt. It included most of the premier writers, painters, and scientists of Europe, many of them Jews—people like Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, Jacques Lipchitz, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Arendt, Franz Werfel, André Breton, André Masson, and other sur- realists, and hundreds more. When Fry witnessed their plight, he became determined not just to give them immediate aid but to find ways for them to escape. Slowly he built up a group of people who could help, forging passports and finding secret paths across the Pyrenees into Spain and then to Lisbon.

Fry himself was constantly in great danger, but he seemed to experience a divine inspiration, achieving greatness and glimpsing immortality by acting as the hero he never thought he could be. His own government tried again and again to stop him and send him home, but he managed to continue his rescue operations for more than a year.

Only in the past decade has the world begun to honor Fry, who died in 1967. He is, for instance, the only American honored at Israel’s Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations.”

Using letters and records unavailable to anyone else, as well as interviews with numerous survivors, Sheila Isenberg has given us an inspiring story of how the brave and determined actions of one individual can help change the world.

The only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial), Fry saved the lives of thousands of refugees from the Nazis. Isenberg, a professor of English at Marist College (Women Who Love Men Who Kill), delivers a moving, workmanlike account of Fry's heroics. During the late '30s Fry, a Harvard-educated editor, journalist and teacher who was radicalized in 1935 when he witnessed Nazi troopers beating Jews in Berlin, wrote New York Times articles concerning the worsening situation in Europe, but didn't manage to increase public awareness. Under the auspices of the Emergency Rescue Committee, an organization of leftist journalists, religious leaders and activists, Fry traveled to Marseilles in August 1940 with $3,000 and a list of refugees, primarily Jewish, stuck in Vichy France, without money or visas. Isenberg details how, under cover of a humanitarian relief center, Fry helped well-known figures such as Marc Chagall, Andr‚ Breton, Hannah Arendt and many lesser-known people sneak across borders and escape. But his evident na‹vet‚ and combative personality sometimes worked against him: mistakenly assuming that most Americans would support his efforts, he alienated officials in the American Embassy who were unsympathetic to the plight of Jews and was forced to return home after a year. Fry's later years were marked by unhappiness in his personal life (he divorced his first wife and had a tempestuous relationship with the second) and destructive political disagreements with former colleagues. Isenberg ably renders prewar and war-time public ignorance and apathy in America and the extraordinary heroism of the sole volunteer for a dangerous rescue mission. Agent, Elizabeth Kaplan. Isenberg's (English, Marist Coll.; Women Who Love Men Who Kill) biography of Varian Fry is part of a developing trend in Holocaust studies to focus attention on "rescuers." Fry, recently the subject of a Showtime docudrama, served as the point man of a New York-based rescue committee that helped a number of prominent European intellectuals and artists, such as Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt, reach the United States after the fall of France in June 1940. Isenberg describes Fry as a man driven later in life to achieve recognition for his efforts. After the war, he was unable to secure steady employment or maintain a stable family life, which Isenberg links to an obsession with his wartime experience. Although Isenberg provides ample context, describing the politics of U.S. immigration and the problems faced by those helping refugees escape from Hitler's Europe, she also periodically goes into excessive detail, at one point even telling us when Fry changed his shirt. Recommended for special collections and public libraries.

Yet, up until the late 1990s, few in this country had heard of Fry. This highly readable biography tells the exciting escape stories of the underground railroad he organized to lead refugees from southern France across the Pyrenees to freedom. Isenberg sets the rescue story against the background of American isolationism and anti-Semitism at the time, documenting her dramatic narrative with more than 70 pages of fascinating notes, including references to letters, interviews, personal papers, and government reports. History That Reads Like A Novel

This is the story of a real-life hero, Varian Fry, who saved hundreds of people, including Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Heinrich Blucher, from the jaws of the Holocaust. It is a real accomplishment for the author to have taken this enormous compendium of names, dates, facts, events and interviews and fashioned them into a story as compelling as any page-turner.
It is a gripping tale of heroism. I wanted to know at each juncture how it would all resolve and was rooting for Fry to succeed despite all his frustrations. The episodic structure of the book is most effective in making it hang together as a narrative. Even the straight bits of historic information about what was really going on at that time are extremely enlightening and valuable. Fry's indomitable spirit through it all, in the face of one disappointment after another is inspiring. Even though his own life finally ended sadly, he still had, as we now have, thanks to him, the lasting impact of the happy endings of the lives he saved.

For someone like myself, who enjoys a really exciting story, preferably about a real person,one need go no further than to read "A Hero of Our Own" by Sheila Isenberg. Varian Frye, a not-so-ordinary American, feels impelled to leave his comfortable life as a writer and editor and go to France as a member of the Emergency Rescue Committe (ERC) and risk his life to save as many refugees (mostly Jews) as he can from the Nazis. Frye is the only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial) because of his work in saving thousands of Jews. If I didn't know it was a true story, I'd think it was fiction because his adventures read like a fast-paced thriller, a veritable realization of the classic "film noir" of the forties. In fact, I feelthe book cries out to be made into a movie which I would be happy to see. Of course some of the book's revealed facts about our own State Department trying to keep refugee Jews from entering the United States when they knew it mean certain death was quite shocking and disturbing. However, all in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone who enjoys reading a fast-paced book about real heros and history.

Varian Fry was an American hero, risking his life to save others, unrecognized during his lifetime, but, fortunately, with Isenberg's new biography, now about to become a well-known figure. Called the artists' Schindler, Fry saved about 1,500 artists, writers, teachers, labor leaders, activists, and others from Hitler -- Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, and Hannah Arendt among the group. A Hero of Our Own tells Fry's story in a lively, compelling style. One can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens in Nazi-ridden, Vichy-controlled Marseille 1940. Who will be saved? Who will be turned over to the Gestapo? Why did Fry risk his life? This book answers all these questions in a fascinating story that is well worth reading -- as Fry is well worth remembering and honoring.

The Rebellion

No the title is not about Lucifer rebelling against God or storming the gates of Heaven to take over. In fact the book is not even about the devil. The idea behind the book is liberation of the self to pursue you own true will and peruse the great work if you even want to call it that. Written in dedication to magicians and therapist Christopher Hyatt who espoused  a radical philosophy that was considered to dangerous by the establish, the work comprises works by many different authors and contributors. Among the contributor are Osho, Israel Regardie, William Hyatt,Austin Osman Spare, Peter Conte, Lon Milo Duquetten and several others. The topics they cover are Marquise De Sade, Prayer, the use of language, martial arts and a few others.

Like I said the book is about liberation and breaking free from the crowd and choosing your own path. Our society and our parent have programmed us from the get go on what we are supposed to do , what to like and who to love. Often times this programming tells us to go against our own interest and not pursue our true will. Included in these messages are thought or recording that make us feel inferior or down, they eat away at our self confidence. This book is about breaking those chains that society has placed on us. This is dangerous to the powers that be, the church, the state and the multimillionaires who exploit the working class. This is the left hand path, recognizing your own god hood and letting everyone else realize theirs.

Starting off with an essay about Marquis De Sade, most known for his delight in torturing women. He ended up being imprisoned and died in an insane asylum. He was not imprisoned for what he did to the women he was imprisoned for defaming Christianity.Marquise saw it all. People in power engage in behavior that is not only immoral and hypocritical but also down right cruel to the people underneath them. They go off on hurting people. But De Sade wrote about self liberation and about an elite core of supermen who ran things and were more enlightened. They ran things. Most of his writing were suppressed as they brought up things that threatened the power structure.

Who are these enlightened being. In other essays they are people who have realized their own godhood and are pursuing their true will. They are not like sheep  that follow the heard where ever they go rather they strike their own path. THey do not get their rocks off by exploiting others. As for slaves they do not serve these enlightened ones rather they go about their psychic slumber and do what everyone else does. They are slaves.

The world is in deep trouble and their are some addresses of the political. But before that one must do the work inside and change the software in order to improve the hardware which is their brain. Robert Anton Wilson is a big proponent of changing how we use language.Change the language then change the perception of what you see and hear. Most people will that the computer is white...no room for interpret at . What we should say if that the computer appears to be white. This leave room for different interpretation and flexibility for new information.

Osho, a philosopher from India, state that revolution have occurred constantly. The powerless take the power from those who hold it but nothing really changes. What he calls for is a rebellion that stems from the word yes rather then no and that rebellion takes place with. Start with love and opening the mind to better possibilities and watch it spread from person to person.

Some of the essays talk about politics.One particular essay is on the issue of gun control and how it pertains to the constitution. We have the right to own weapons for self defense. Yet the author is against registering them for fear a nzi like government will take them away. Another essay talks about Obama and his Obama care. I get the concept and the line of though but in terms of politics I believe to each their own and would not have placed such in a book like this.

On Christianity which has been hypocritical and bloody has reduced the populace to the thinking of sheep. Thanks to Christianity people believe in a cocent of armageddon. Such mistaken thinking is based on faulty translation and misunderstanding. We now now believe in it that we will probably create our own Armegedden. 

Over all excellent works by the authors. While my review gives a good over view and some depth I strongly advise you get the book and read it. It is only 4.99 on Amazon kindle. I took aery from this book a desire to plumb deeper into quantum psychology and that our language forms our thought which influences strongly our perception of reality.

A wonderfully enjoyable book. The pacing of it fit perfectly to keep the mind engaged and not bogged down with too much of one subject, for a book like this. Similar to the Darklore series by Daily Grail Publishing, this book offers a variety of perspectives and ideas/thoughts/theories in regards to the occult and more. Definitely a recommended book for any occultist, esotericist, or just plain ole interested party in other theories and thought processes.

almost too fun for a stats book

The authors make regression not only interesting but fairly painless. This is the clearest stats book ever. It even explained concepts from lower level stats classes so that they made more sense. Examples actually clarified material as well! All stats books should be written like this.

Know your statistical software! or don't bother

Simple and clear at the outset, it soon dives into applications where the conclusions made are unclear, particularly because it uses formulas keyed to software I'm unfamiliar with. A thorough course in regression and correlation should be announced as a prerequisite. The word "Applying" in the title is a warning.

Worth the cost

This book has helped me understand regression better. I bought the impulsively, but it was worth every penny. Yes, I would recommend this to people interested in conducting quantitative research in which they are trying to predict an outcome from any number of variables.
