A Long Awaited Story

The mystery of the Dark Riders is one of those pieces of Warcraft lore that seemed long forgotten - a story that begin way back in Vanilla WoW and was never really explained. This graphic novel does a good job of filling in some of the gaps in the story of the Scythe of Elune and the Dark Riders. Unfortunately, I doubt it would make much sense to someone who wasn't already well versed in this sort of thing...

Rookie Writer Belts A Winner

Baseball players seldom hit a home run in their first at bat in the big leagues. Same with authors, but Wendy Clinch hit one out of the park in her first at bat in the mystery writers' league. Double Black is a very enjoyable reading experience. Clinch has a crisp style that makes you want to keep on reading. Her expertise in the ski world makes it easy for those of us not familiar with the ski scene to get with it in a hurry. Her feel for the unique atmosphere of Vermont makes the reader feel he/she is right there in the Green Mountains. You sense all through the story that the obvious suspects really didn't do it but you don't learn the killer's surprising identity until four pages from the end. Please, Wendy, don't make us wait too long for the next Ski Diva Mystery.

A fun read

Readers who ski, or who love Vermont, will enjoy this story. It's a lighthearted mystery that I particularly enjoyed as someone who's hiked, snowshoed, and cross country skied in many similar places . . . . could all she writes about have been happening around me, all the time?

Promising start, but...

This has all of the makings of a solid first novel. However, as someone who moved to Vermont 15 years ago so I could work and ski in the same place, I really need to be critical.

First off, even though I only rode snowmobiles during the winter of 1996-7 when I made snow at Stowe Mtn Resort, I know and work with quite a few snowmobilers and resent the author's poor depiction of snowmobilers as cavemen. To her credit, the author acknowledges that the divide between snowmobilers and skiers lands "in the center of the middle class", but I feel that her characterizations of them are not just intended to portray the generalizations of her protagonist, a 20-something ski-bum, but rather hint at what seems to be a personal dislike of a culture that is just as much a part of the Green Mountain State (and its economy) as her passion, skiing.

Second, The murder weapon (not a spoiler) in the story is the chain from a chainsaw. Fine and good. However, the author misses some fundamentals about how a chainsaw works. Unlike bicycle chains, chainsaw chains are purchased, installed and removed in a connected, circular, a.k.a. unbroken condition. A chain is installed on a chainsaw "bar" by loosening 2 bolts on the bar, sliding it shorter, putting the chain on, making the bar longer until the chain is tight, and then re-tightening the 2 bolts. I know of no model of chainsaw that breaks this paradigm. However, the author is convinced that chainsaw chains need to be removed by popping a pin out of one of the links with pliers, thus breaking the chain. This would be only a nit-picky detail, but the plot hinges on it, trust me. (sorry for the pun)

Now that I'm finished being negative, I really appreciated the author's nod to a favorite pastime of mine and my friends - "skinning" up mountains after dark and skiing down with headlamps.

Well-designed introductory textbook for motivated students

I took some psychology courses back in my college days, but that was in the early 90s. Since science is always changing, I wanted to brush up on some basics before pursuing graduate studies. This textbook did a good job of refreshing my memory and bringing me more up to date with more current science and research. Not only that, it went into more detail than some other similar textbooks without being overwhelming or hard to follow. I would highly recommend it as an introductory psychology textbook for someone new to the subject, or for someone looking to refresh their memory after a number of years after college before pursuing further studies. I feel more prepared now to tackle some more detailed study in the field.

I thought this text was great--it provides information in a very clear and well-explained manner for the student who has never taken a psychology course before. Gray proves he has a sense of humor as well, injecting funny lines every now and then. It provides a lot of pertinent information in an interesting manner, and covers everything from theories on development and society to cognition and neuroscience. After finishing my intro psych class I even found myself wishing I could still use the text for my other classes (in fact I still refer to it every now and then).

If truth be told, I do not even like psychology, and feel contemt of some sort for it.I took it this semester to fulfill my humanity requirement.Nevertheless, I cannot deny that this book is wonderfully written, and it was a true pleasure reading it ! Peter Gray is obviously very fond of psychology, as well as of teaching it.It was much fun reading a book written so sensitively and with so much enthusiasm. I know many universities assign this book and am therefore surprised only one person reviewed it so far.

About the Author

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. Bob has written Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Introductory Algebra for College Students, Essentials of Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Introductory and Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Essentials of Introductory and Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Algebra for College Students, Thinking Mathematically, College Algebra, Algebra and Trigonometry, and Precalculus, all published by Pearson Prentice Hall.

3 stars for the book, 1 star for the "new" edition

Overall a solid Precalculus text. Hits the important highlights but occasionally gets bogged down in "real world" examples that are grossly oversimplified. Good choice of problems, good end of chapter outlines.

The downside, however, is that the only thing that ever changes in the new editions is the price. I've got the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition sitting on my desk in front of me and they are virtually identical. Many of the sections are nearly verbatim in each edition. The only thing that seems to change is the pictures, and even some of those have been reused for the 4th edition. There's just no new added content to be found.

Superb precalculus textbook.

Bob Blitzer has done a wonderful job of compiling a precalculus textbook that can teach a course better than many professors.

The first thing that struck me about this book was the casual tone. Blitzer writes as if he were a friend explaining a concept. He is not afraid to show helpful acronyms or pneumonic devices (ASTC - all students take calculus - to help remember which trig functinos were positive in which quadrants), and he often gives hints in the margin that clear things up or elucidate certain mathematical concepts. I know that these helpful tips have saved my skin on multiple occasions.

The opposite of Blitzer's tone is one of a stern and serious math professor. It was a blessing in disguise that my precalculus teacher was just like this. She lectured from the textbook (and did a much poorer job of teaching than the book itself), so I was able to read ahead, take notes based on the book (instead of her lectures), and finish the homework assignments in class.

Blitzer has identified many ways to apply the math to real life, whether it involves angular velocity in physics or population growth. Obviously, certain topics are begging to be applied (right triangle trigonometry, for instance), but Blitzer does a great job of making the math seem useful.

Another positive aspect about this book is the way Blitzer designed his list of problems. The answer to every odd problem is found in the back of the book, but every even problem is closely modeled after its odd predecessor. Thus, even without a definitive answer, you can be sure that you did the problem correctly because you saw an extremely similar one just a few seconds ago.

Blizter is also able to integrate the widespread technology of graphing calculators. He makes the assumption that a precalculus student should have access to some sort of graphing calculator and requests their use on quite a few problems. When graphs are shown, Blitzer has the foresight to indicate the dimensions and scale of the graph so the student can recreate the graph on their calculator.

After going through every section of this book, the only negative comment in my mind is that simple harmonic motion is explained rather poorly, but this is a math textbook, not a physics treatise, and thus this point can be safely disregarded. Bob Blitzer has composed a magnificent math tome, and I strongly recommend it to everyone.
