Get this book

This is one of the great books in the field. As an introduction to the concepts of chronic pain this will be a classic. It is the ideal introduction to the concepts of chronic pain, and is the essential introduction/comp[anion to 'Explain Pain'. And it is funny. And it puts pain the context of everyday life. No abstraction or scholarly analysis this. Yet it doesn't talk down to the reader. Despite Moseley's eminence in the field, he writes with a strong connection to his knowledge and situations we all encounter. Yet, for the professional, his statements can be fully referenced. I use this book all the time as an introduction to the concepts of pain in my professional work.

Should be mandatory reading for any clinician who has failed miserably to explain pain!

Finally after three decades of trying and failing miserably to treat people living with chronic pain, do I now have a way to "get them." (See chapter on the Hino.) Not only did Lorimer Moseley simplify the neuroscience of pain biology, he entertained me to the point of loud gaffaws that woke my husband dozing in the other room! Thanks for the tears of joy and enlightenment. p.s. G.L. Moseley, Ph.D. is just as funny in-person, if you ever get a chance to hear him speak, take it!

You have to read this book to read "Explain Pian", the text book and use the handbook. It is also a hoot to read
the stories that equate to the brain and pain. The authors of this series are "very special people". Do give it a
Go if you or some one you love are in pain. Just thinking about their approach to pain will give you a timeout

A Practioner's Guide to Requirements

Defining and managing requirements is not easy with simple, small systems but requirements definition and management in large, complex systems has to be set up, thought through and carefully managed with the best interest of clients or end users in mind. That is a lot of ground to cover and in many organizations, folks have difficulty figuring out who is responsible for what and when. This book walks through the details of how to approach and manage requirements in many different environments with various development methodologies. I particularly like the explanations and the way roles are laid out for managers, developers and support organizations, as well as stakeholders and end users.
Having worked with requirements as a practioner in commercial and government development shops, I wish I had had this book to help explain some of these key points for different methods and development approaches. Then, it would have been easier to concentrate on requirement's attributes, definition and analysis techniques, and traceability. If you are an agile shop, there is a direct approach on how to capture, group, iteratively develop and then test requirements. There is also an excellent chapter (8 Requirements Driven System Testing) that should be read by every software or system developer and testing group member. This is the book that you should have available for all development teams and make sure they use it!

sound advice...

This little book is packed with sound advice.

Pros-
The book covers a wide variety of topics and does so at a detailed enough level that you have a good understanding of the topic. They do not waste time on filler content. It covers building a requirement's taxonomy, eliciting requirements, Model-Driven Requirements Engineering, quality attributes, the importance of architecture, engineering platforms, requirements management, requirements-driven testing, rapid development techniques, hazard and threat analysis, distributed requirements engineering, and creating a requirements database.

As the book covers all these topics the authors made really great use of visualizing the material with really great diagrams.

They cover a lot of best practices and offer really sound advice. The tips on developing uses cases are great.

Each chapter comes with an extensive reference section.

Cons-
The publisher should have made the book a bit larger. The diagrams included in the book are some of the best I have seen, but they are very small. They could have made electronic versions available online (I guess I could blow them up on a copier).

The book was definitely written by people hanging out in the engineering world because they use a ton of acronyms and they are not always easy to figure out. They did not include all of them in the index.

I found it a little annoying that some of the key concepts/tools point to internal Siemens tools like the DesignAdvisor and URML (Unified Requirements Modeling Language).

All in all
I highly recommend this book. Its size allows me to carry it around with my laptop. I have been taking it everywhere for weeks now and every time I think of shelving it at work or at home I choose not to so I can review one or more of the sections one last time.

If you are involved in software development at all (developer, user, project manager, architect, tester, etc.) this is required reading.

Good Practical Guide

"Software & Systems Requirements Engineering In Practice" came to me at a very opportune time. The software development portion of my project was going to India and the management had decided Power Designer was going to be the next silver bullet to vastly improve the quality of our software. This book explained how to use any tool like Power Designer to produce artifacts that would lead to a buildable and testable product. The most important word in the title was practice. This practice part of this book explains how to avoid many pitfalls. The necessity of tracing requirements to test cases and source code was demonstrated and very important. I have seen many requirements which only have a vague resemblance of what is actually built. I am a novice at requirements engineering and this book gave me a very understandable approach to building useful and complete requirements.

An Important Resource for Learning Diagnostics

I work as a child psychologist, where mental health diagnosis plays a big part in my daily role. I also teach DSM/diagnostics to graduate level graduate students. For me, these casebooks are extremely helpful, both in my role as a diagnostician, as well as in my work as an instructor.

This book doesn't go into much description about DSM, the process of diagnosing, or treatment. Thus, you will need to have a copy of DSM 5. Unlike previous editions of the DSM case studies, these are organized by diagnostic category [e.g., Depressive Disorders, Somatic Symptoms, Sleep Disorders, etc.] and there is a brief description of what symptoms/characteristics these entail.

For the most part, this book is a collection of vignettes [103, if I counted correctly]. Some are relatively easy and straight-forward [e.g., Jane was referred for an urgent psychiatric consultation after she told her roommate that she was suicidal], while others are much more complex [e.g., Sally presented to a psychiatrist as part of a court proceeding that was intended to legally reassign her gender to female]. The goal is to get you to think about the symptoms being presented and for you to formulate your diagnostic hypotheses.

With many of the vignettes, you are left with more questions than anything, as these descriptions are brief. Unlike your more typical case study, you aren't provided with extensive information about the person's family history, prior mental health background, treatment history, etc. When that information is included, it is done so to help you come up with the accurate diagnosis, particularly in situations where time-lines, family history, or prior history must be taken into account. For teaching/learning purposes, however, this is ok. Most of these vignettes are only a page or two, with the goal of highlighting key characteristics of a particular condition.

The case studies presented are relatively diverse. Some are made up and some appear to be genuine cases. At the end of each, there is a brief description of what the diagnosis is, or what the diagnosis will be in the future in the symptoms persist. The discussion is tied directly to DSM, telling you which diagnostic criteria the person meets. When applicable, a discussion of differential diagnosis is included.

Consistent with the philosophy and model of DSM, this book doesn't give treatment recommendations. Therefore, if you determine that Client X has an Alcohol Use Disorder, ADHD, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and/or Antisocial Personality Disorder, you need to decide what to do next on your own [e.g., individual therapy, marital counseling, medication, group therapy, etc.]. The book will not guide you in this regard. What is helpful, however, is that all of the vignettes have 'Suggested Reading' at the end, should you want to learn more about a particular condition.

Even if you have a solid command of diagnostics, this is a good book to have. This is especially true as we try to learn about the changes in DSM 5 and what this means for our work.

I used this book in masters level psychopathology class this summer and it has been very helpful. The cases are brief but substantive, the DX is provided, along with a rationale/explanation.

It's a page turner! A must for clinicians!

The DSM-5 Clinical Cases book has been so helpful to my understanding of how to diagnose clients the new way! Not only are there case presentations and a diagnosis, but after each presentation there's a very helpful explanation about the reason why the particular diagnosis was chosen.

Rich source for quick reference as well as quick revision !

I bought this book mainly as a quick revision aid. Wasn't sure how helpful it would be but am pleasantly surprised how well written and well presented this book is. Extensive coverage of nealy ALL emergency presentations and conditions .I think it has been written mainly for " on the floor " referencing but its unique , comprehensive style of presentation and content is equally well suited for a quick revision if you are preparing for an exam, especially ones that have VAQs and SAQs like the ACEM Fellowship( Australian/NZ) .Wont help much with MCQs. You need to have a diagnosis already made though but it will give everything else you need to know right from pre hospital to final disposition stage. Highly recommended. Ideal for the last minute revisions !

Nice reference we have in the ER - this is what it was purchased for. When I first started in ER - used this book like crazy now its there as a reference to look up things we may forget. Solid reference text for a busy ER - Also have Tinatanalli as well in the ER .

This word search book is great! I received a copy at a discounted price in exchange for an honest review and I think with over 100 puzzles it will keep us busy for a long time. I like the answer key right on the next page instead of having to flip to the end of the book. Very easy to navigate.
