Another Winner from Betty Neels

Nurse Beth Partridge first meets Professor Alexander van Zeust when she literally runs into him while riding her bicycle. After that, it seems like she keeps bumping into him since he is doing some surgery and consulting at the hospital she works at. Beth enjoys their encounters and she has feelings for him that she can't explain. When Alexander offers Beth the chance to go nurse his sister, Martina, who just had her appendix removed and take care of Martina's four young children, Beth jumps at the chance. She's been feeling a bit restless in her job and is tired of living in a cramped apartment with her brother William. She grew up in the country and misses it. Beth realizes that she may see Alex while taking care of Martina and her children and looks forward to their encounters, although she's not sure why. As for Alex, he's old enough to know what he wants and patient enough to wait for Beth to realize what her true feelings are.

"A Star Looks Down" is another delightful romance from Betty Neels. She used one of her basic plot lines - rich, handsome Dutch doctor falls in love with plain, but feisty, English nurse - and did what she did best with that plot line, create an enjoyable, sweet romance. Beth is a nice heroine - a bit put upon by older step brother Philip who basically took her beloved house in the country away from her and by younger brother William who has a habit of borrowing money from her - but very loving and caring. She's so used to being told that she is plain that she doesn't realize how wonderful her hair and eyes are, which makes her an endearing heroine. Professor Alexander Van Zeust is the kind of hero that only exists in Betty Neels novels - a very talented doctor, very rich, owner of several large and beautifully furnished homes in several countries, in love with Beth and willing to take his time until she realizes she is in love with him. The supporting characters are well written. William is a bit selfish, but harmless unlike Phillip who is a true villain; Alexander's sister Martina is a bit spoiled, but a loving mother; and the children are all sweet and adorable, with Dirk, the oldest, the real standout, as he seems to be a real child, with real feelings and faults. The romance between Beth and Alexander is nicely done, but very old-fashioned. Romance readers who want more than chaste kisses between the hero and heroine, won't find it in a Betty Neels book.

He asked Beth Partridge - kind, capable, sensible Beth - to take charge of them for a week. She made a splendid job of it, so one week extended to two, and then longer... The professor was happy, the children loved Beth, and their mother knew they were in good hands. Everyone was happy - except Beth. She had fallen in love with her remote employer, but he wasn't likely to be interested in her. She wanted to return to her hospital job, away from all the emotional turmoil, but how when she was needed by the children?

In this "rich good-looking Dutch/British Doctor & plain British Nurse story" Recovery Room Staff Nurse Beth Partridge literally runs into Professor Alexander van Zeust early one morning while trying to report to work on time. They continually meet or are thrown together by chance. An unsuspecting and humble Beth has no idea that "chance" is assisted not by "fate" but by a very patient and determined Alexander. The subtle manner in which he "provides opportunities" to be around her while waiting for her to fall in love with him provides a pleasant, sweet story. To add drama to this story Beth contributes an evil older step-brother and a somewhat selfish younger brother; while Alexander adds a somewhat spoiled sister with a misbehaving, naughty nephew. This is a typical feel-good Betty Neels story that provides a pleasant afternoon read with a few smiles.

As usual this lady delivered another heart warming romance. People love her or hate her, it seems, but her experience and morals shine through each story. They are old fashioned stories and depict a time long gone but are still relevant and enjoyable for this day and age. I have read all her books and will continue to re-read them.l

In this chronicle of the crimes and the FBI investigations, Ginsburg ( Poisoned Blood ) reports that several other murdered women may have been victimized by the same person. He also describes the experiences of a young woman who survived a violent assault, likely by the same killer. Focusing on the skills, tactics and personalities of the police and psychologists sifting through case evidence and leads, Ginsburg writes with keen appreciation of the region's backroads, rest stops, landscape and pace of life. At least six women have been stabbed to death in the Connecticut River Valley area of New Hampshire and Vermont since 1984. The similarities among the killings has led to speculation that they are the work of a single killer. This book describes each murder in great detail, vividly profiling the victims, chronicling the various police efforts to solve the crimes, and considering a number of possible suspects. (One is arrested and convicted of two murders but turns out not to be the serial killer.) The unifying figure in this discursive account is psychologist John Philpin, whose deepening involvement in the case and empathetic attempts to create a psychological profile of the killer ultimately threatens his emotional security. While the chapters provide a series of involving narratives (the account of the one survivor is riveting), the fact that the case remains unsolved gives this book an unfocused and unfinished feel. Still Active Case

I live in the area where the murders happened and knew some of the victims, They were really wonderful ladies who died a horrible death and the killer was never caught. I blame the police because they didn't follow up on leads right away, they were dismissive at times. The one person I was convinced did it was never even mentioned, I still think Jeff did it, and until there's proof otherwise, He will always be on top of the suspects in this on going case.

Intelligently Written True Crime

Between 1979 and 1983, three young girls, ages 11-13, were abducted and killed in the Connecticut River valley of New Hampshire/Vermont. Eventually a serial killer was caught and sentenced. But the killings did not stop. Older women (late teens to 30s) began to go missing, their bodies turning anywhere from the next day to 2 years later.
Eventually it became clear that there was another serial killer working the valley and that, when some earlier cases were attributed to the one still at large, their killings had for a time overlapped.
Philip Ginsburg's SHADOW OF DEATH tells the story of the search and capture of Gary Schaeffer and of the lengthy and ultimately futile search for the second killer.
(I present this information only because the author also does so on the book's first page.)
The story is told from the points of view of the detectives who worked the cases, and also from the point of view of psychologist John Philpin. Philpin was requested in 1981 by the police to try to create a profile of the killer of 12 year old murder victim Theresa Fenton. The profile was found helpful enough that Philpin became a regular consultant in the attempt to solve the killings. Philpin became more and more proficient and more and more emotionally involved in his work as the investigations continued, and his increasingly detailed profiles along with the effects the work had on him are among the main focal points of the book. Also presented in considerable detail is background material on three men who were among the more serious suspects.
Ginsburg, as he showed in his fine true crime work, POISONED BLOOD, is an excellent writer/reporter/researcher. The book is in one respect disappointing in that the second killer remains unknown - or did so at least as of 1993 when the book was published - but this is not a criticism of Ginsburg and, as I've noted, he mentions it immediately.
While not "exciting", SHADOW OF DEATH is intelligent reading. It is not a must read, but I recommend it for true crime fans and those who might be interested in the subject of psychological profiling.

There's a serial killer running loose in the Connecticut River Valley

There's at least one, possibly two, serial killers running loose in the Connecticut River Valley.

I can tell you first-hand, that if you travel to Claremont, New Hampshire as I did on a follow up to reading this fine book, the locals will tell you who the killer is and where he lives!

Ginsberg did a superb job of following up on the police investigations which were run in both Vermont and New Hampshire, documenting all the victims and exactly where they were each abducted and/or killed. Each of the stories attached to the respective victims provides the reader with an informed insight into these unfortunate folks' lives and their subsequent deaths.

The book also features a good number of relevant photographs, so detailed that the reader can travel to these very sites today (as I did a few years back).

For the fan of true crime, I can say as a career professional law enforcement officer that Ginsberg has given us a first-class, albeit a bit unnerving, story of murder in Vermont and New Hampshire. Highly recommended.

HORRIBLE DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Worst book ever. I'm a college student, so I've experienced bad books every once in awhile. This book burned for the atrocities is caused me and my fellow students. A new book needs to be written. Everything about it is bad. The writing, the bad explanations, the bad exercises.

Great book on Assembly Language

Previously the books on Assembly I have read have been either 100 percent Intel syntax or have been based on DOS Debug, which is pretty antiquated. Reading this book introduced a number of new concepts and was for the most part an enjoyable read. First thing though, this book is designed as a textbook. While the book does cover the basic syntax in Assembly, I feel that it would be a difficult to read for a beginner who has not at least wet their feet in some form of assembly. It is definitely meant to be a book used in a classroom with an experienced facilitator covering the material. Being that it is a textbook, it does have nice exercises at the end of each chapter, if you can get passed the mental block of doing "homework", which are very helpful in understanding the material. The content of the book is very good. A detailed explanation of the different memory models used in the x86-programming model was very informative. I unfortunately did not get passed the Pentium processor programming, but I look forward to going over the MIPS processor when I get a chance and something to develop on.

good skill to cultivate

The Pentium chip dominates the desktop, and this book reflects that. It teaches you the ideas in assembly programming, with a clear emphasis on doing so for the Pentium.

Dandamudi also provides a concise summary of the history of the Pentium, going way back to the 8085 and 8080, around 1982. From these sprang the x86 family. All the way to the 486. But AMD's pesky nipping at the heels caused Intel to lose copyright to "586"; from which Pentium was chosen as the new copyrightable label. Alas, Intel never pushed "Sextium" but instead used "Pentium Pro".

The book has copious examples of assembly code. These are extensively documented inline, to an extent that you will rarely see in most real code. The pedagogy should be clear to most readers. Who are also encouraged to try the problems provided in each chapter. Assembly programming is very different from coding in a higher language like C or Java, and it is a worthy skill to cultivate. And one that is independent of the actual processor family that you code in. If nothing else, the text gives you an underlying qualitative understanding of how higher languages are ultimately expressed in binary executables.

I suppose I should say that there is also some coverage of alternative chip families in the book. Notably some RISC processors. These form a conceptually distinct approach to designing a microprocessor.

Digimon World Official Guide, Good only....

I have had this guide for a few weeks and I like it. The information is correct. (And that's allot more then I can say for *any* Brady Games guide.) Only the charts and maps are rather hard to understand. The Digivolution Chart is *very* confusing. I got so confused trying to understand them that I had to just wing it and hope I got the Digimon I wanted (and or needed). The Digimon Data chart is very nice. Easy to understand and not confusing. My only complaint are the maps and Digivolution chart. Other then that this is a great book with allot of Info. If your stuck in the game buy it. If you want to know all the items buy it. If you just want it to play the game buy it! Its great!

It takes the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How out of playing. So if you like Pokemon, Monster Rancher, and/or RPGs then buy this book. Oh yeah the Game too.

About the Author
Robert L. Gould (Ph.D., University of California--San Diego) is a leader in the statistics education community. He has served as chair of the American Statistical Association's Committee on Teacher Enhancement, has served as chair of the ASA's Statistics Education Section, and was a co-author of the "Guidelines for Assessment in Instruction on Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report." As the associate director of professional development for CAUSE (Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education), he has worked closely with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) to provide traveling workshops and summer institutes in statistics (he also presented an AMATYC summer institute in 2009). For over ten years, he has served as Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at the UCLA Department of Statistics, and he is Director of the UCLA Center for the Teaching of Statistics. In 2012, Rob was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Colleen N. Ryan has taught statistics, chemistry, and physics to diverse community college students for decades. She taught at Oxnard College from 1975 to 2006, where she earned the Teacher of the Year Award. Colleen currently teaches statistics part-time at California Lutheran University. She often designs her own lab activities. Her passion is to discover new ways to make statistical theory practical, easy to understand, and sometimes even fun. Colleen earned a B.A. in physics from Wellesley College, an M.A.T. in physics from Harvard University, and an M.A. in chemistry from Wellesley College. Her first exposure to statistics was with Frederick Mosteller at Harvard. In her spare time, she sings with the Oaks Chamber Singers, has been an avid skier in the past, and enjoys time with her family.
